ANTIGUA OBSERVER- A 58-year-old hotel steward has been banned from driving for the next 90 days after pleading guilty in the St John’s Magistrates’ Court to driving without insurance.
Franklin Shoy admitted to committing the offence on May 22 on the Anchorage Road.
Police officers on mobile patrol in a marked vehicle reportedly observed Shoy’s car stopped in the centre of the road near the bridge. He was seen speaking with a young woman.
The officers approached and asked why he had obstructed the roadway.
Shoy explained that he had stopped to ask the woman if she needed a ride. He apologised but was arrested, taken into custody, and later charged. His vehicle was impounded and taken to the Government Motor Pool.
In court, Shoy admitted that the vehicle was neither licensed nor insured. He told the magistrate that he had been experiencing financial difficulties and was therefore unable to regularise the vehicle.
Acting Chief Magistrate Dexter Wason told Shoy he should have left the vehicle parked and taken public transport, warning that such actions put both himself and others at risk.
Shoy was convicted and fined $2,500, which must be paid within 30 days or he will face a 30-day prison sentence.

How does not having ng insurance put people’s lives at risk?
Is this judge an idiot?
Now if he was driving impaired or reckless that’s an entire different thing, but how does not having a vehicle registered put lives at risk?
This seems to be a retaliatory fine, because $2500 for not having insurance is ridiculous.. this damn judicial system must be starved for money.
Yes fine the man yes, but to take away his license and order him to pay $2500 is ridiculous. Yes I know you want to send a message, but this is not a criminal act judge.. I guess the judge doesn’t know that insurance and getting tag to drive on the roads are tax levied on the citizens, and has nothing to do with criminal activity.
HMMMM, Driving without insurance is a serious offense. The fine seems appropriate to deter such behavior.
I hope this serves as a reminder to all drivers about the importance of having valid insurance.
He lucky a jus’ fine and not jail. Suppose he did hit somebody?
But what he doing driving with out insurance at tha age… leave that for the young kids
@Islanman26 Cleary you don’t have a vehicle. Because an unlicensed vehicle is on the road and hit your vehicle. You have nobody to claim the damage. You must present a court accusation to claim compensation, and then started a back and forth drama. The person can say I’m not guilty, then another 3 or 5 month delay, again you have to preset Expert opinion, etc. That cost Money and time a lot, that you can avoid that with Insurance. If he hit your vehicle, you present a claim to his Insurance and Done.
Also no person can claim neither. IF you think driving without Insurance is Fine. Then let go, lets everyone drive around without..Let’s see what happens after 2 years then.
Read what a said again. In no way I said the man should drive without insurance or a valid tag, but those actions were not wilful or criminal, it was a bad situation the man was in financially. So yes, fine him, but to take his license and then fine him $2500 is excessive. That’s what I’m a alluding to.
And many experts will tell you that driving without a tag on your car does not put people lives at risk, that’s ridiculous.
Everyone has a write to travel, and not having a simple tag(tax) or insurance(more taxes) on your car should not be considered criminal, which the judge is suggesting here..it’s a simple road violation.
And coulda or shoulda is not applicable in court..you have to judge the case on its merits, and the facts that are before you. He should have been just warned and get a ticket! now if he continues to do it, then thats negligence and would be a total different case that would be judged on its merits as well at that time.
Two wrongs never make a right in any world we live in. And I’m always on the side of truth first, then justice.
You cannot use the courts to oppress someone, and that seems to be what happened here.
You have sense? If he hit someone WITH NO INSURANCE doesn’t that put peoples lives at risk? The victim would not have any one to sue…as no insurance was in place.
Islanman26 u are a real dumbass. Bet u woulda NEVER drive without insurance up in Amerrikka. People like u always making noise on outside!!
Oh well so it go…Sometimes you don’t have the funds to get your vehicle insurance and license update it’s best choice to leave it parked. Sometimes you might take a lil chance and still drive but you have to be extremely careful and don’t stop in the middle of the road like Mr. Man above.. But best thing is to leave it parked up untill you sort out ya payapaz
@Hey dumb truth teller.
What America has to do with anything?
And I don’t live in America dumbo, I live here in Antigua where I’m from.
Again, not having insurance is not a criminal act dummy..go research your very laws. It’s a driving incident. You cannot judge someone on if.
But then again you’re too dumb to know that.publuc opinion is not law. This is the very dumb system that needs to be override in the Caribbean…these very oppressive ignorant rules.
The man fines were excessive dummy.
To lock someone up for not having a tag is oppressive, especially when the person is clearly struggling financially and explained his struggles.
