Hospital Beds Occupied by Social Cases, Straining Emergency Care

Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, Hospital medical Director

— Social cases remain a persistent challenge at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, with hospital officials warning that the issue continues to limit bed space and place pressure on emergency services.

Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis said many individuals are brought to the hospital despite not requiring acute medical care. While medically stable, some patients remain on wards because there is no safe place for them to go and family members cannot be located or refuse responsibility.

At one point, the hospital was managing as many as 17 social cases, occupying beds needed for emergency and inpatient care. Although the number briefly dropped over a recent weekend, it climbed again within days, highlighting the recurring nature of the problem.

Belle-Jarvis stressed that the hospital is not designed to function as a long-term care facility and urged families and the wider community to play a more active role in supporting elderly and vulnerable relatives.

Government officials have acknowledged growing concerns about elder neglect and abuse. Cabinet has indicated plans to introduce legislation addressing the abandonment of elderly persons and the protection of their assets.

Belle-Jarvis has highlighted one of the many problems by stressing that the hospital is not designed to function as a long-term care facility and urged families and the wider community to play a more active role in supporting elderly and vulnerable relatives

    This is a Government failure.
It is tge Minister who should be addressing the problem.

This is how you measure progress not by the number of boats in St Johns Habour or the number of arrivals at V C Bird International.

  3. Cutie found a bed at Fiennes for a murder cinvict until his death.
Whatever he had given to Cutie he had to be rewarded with better treatment.
CUTIE had released him from prison until Gaston ordered his return.
Cutie couldn’t break his promise so he housed him ar Fiennes instead of HMP.
I said this to advise Demr Belle-Jarvis to call Cutie to find bed for the social cases and free up the hospital emergency room beds.
He knows how to do it for those who greased his sticky plans.
Let him go it for all.
In fact he will get additional votes in yhe next elections.
He is accustomed to going to Fiennes and picking them up to go and vote for him.
Dr Belle, you do not have a problem.
    Just call 1-800-CUTIEB.
HE WILL FREE UP THE EMERGENCY ROOM BEDS.

  4. Facial expressions: ALP and Gaston and molwyn ask her to strike back at the public for criticizing the run down state of the hospital with basic toilet papers unavailable, they ask her to conflate the issue between patients that stay a little few hours over release date, the hold thing is clear to see, because even all the ALP politicians fly out for medical treatment for even minor scrapes.
Everything falls at Gaston money wastage and plundering leaving the country in need, office and road infrastructure rin down, no water and constant electricity interruptions due to the entitled electricity manager who don’t know a thing about that feel except personnel management.
Gaston function as a finance minister cripples all things in antigua and Barbuda, but strange enough Gaston bank account is well kept.

  5. This situation is not unique to Antigua and Barbuda alone but is happening all over the Caribbean. Many relatives have literally abandoned their sick and aged parents and grandparents in hospitals simply because they do not have the resources, the secure housing facility and time to care for them at home. This is so, even as some relatives collect and pocket the sick patients old age pension from Social Security. Short of taking to Parliament an Enforcement of Maintenance Act mandating and forcing relatives to care for their elderly and sick family members,:very little else can he done. Government must seriously look into the longterm and expand and improve the infirmary to house the social cases from the hospital because this situation is unlikely to get any better anytime and hospital might soon be housing more social patients than really sick ones. More and more of our citizens are reaching age 70 and over and are in need of special long-term care. We have to plan better for all the eventualities.

  6. @watta ting it’s a MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS, that is about to explode and send shrapnel over the entire island, if this ticking time bomb is not diffused sooner, rather than later. Here hoping that this mental health crisis which political sycophants like you are definitely suffering from will not explode sending shrapnel your way, because poliTRICKtans who’re indoctrinating the likes of you are not the pawns nor foot soldiers, the food for fodder on these perilous battlefields, of life.

@SKYY…well the caviar, lobster, champagne and English harbor grog on the poliTRICKtans yachts served to their high end Epstein style clients numb our poliTRICKtans cognitive brain cells like opioids do to such realities of the people they are selected to represent.

  7. Every problem is also an opportunity. Although we as a society, prefer not to put our elderly in homes, it would helpful to the community to have a few businesses running retirement home communities where elderly persons could have little apartments or private rooms in shared buildings, with nurses on staff to check on more sick ones. The pensions or SS payments should go directly to the homes by law and relatives can contribute to the rest of the cost if it is higher. Retirement communities or homes should be inspected regularly to ensure proper care. It should even be possible to purchase one of the tiny apartments so no rent or regular large fees are needed and the SS can cover building maintenance fees, food etc.
