Hospital Beds Occupied by Social Cases, Straining Emergency Care

— Social cases remain a persistent challenge at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, with hospital officials warning that the issue continues to limit bed space and place pressure on emergency services.

Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis said many individuals are brought to the hospital despite not requiring acute medical care. While medically stable, some patients remain on wards because there is no safe place for them to go and family members cannot be located or refuse responsibility.

At one point, the hospital was managing as many as 17 social cases, occupying beds needed for emergency and inpatient care. Although the number briefly dropped over a recent weekend, it climbed again within days, highlighting the recurring nature of the problem.

Belle-Jarvis stressed that the hospital is not designed to function as a long-term care facility and urged families and the wider community to play a more active role in supporting elderly and vulnerable relatives.

Government officials have acknowledged growing concerns about elder neglect and abuse. Cabinet has indicated plans to introduce legislation addressing the abandonment of elderly persons and the protection of their assets.

    This is a Government failure.
It is tge Minister who should be addressing the problem.

This is how you measure progress not by the number of boats in St Johns Habour or the number of arrivals at V C Bird International.
