His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams, Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, joined the Antigua and Barbuda Scout Association and the Antigua and Barbuda Girl Guides Association for their Annual Founder’s Day and World Thinking Day Service at the All Saints Anglican Church on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at 3 p.m.
The service, held under the theme “Ready for Life, Reflecting on the Symbolism and Values of Our Movements,” underscored the continued commitment of the Scouting and Guiding movements to fostering leadership, integrity, and service among young people and featured messages from the Scout and Girl Guides Commissioners Patricia Salmon and Suzette Spencer-Burton respectively.
In his remarks, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams expressed appreciation for the role of the Scouts and Girl Guides in shaping the character and leadership of Antigua and Barbuda’s youth. He emphasized the significance of reflecting on the values and symbolism of these movements, stating:
“Our young people today face significant challenges, including mental health struggles, bullying, violence, and the pressures of an ever-changing world. Yet, within the Scouting and Guiding movements, they find mentorship, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. These movements provide a safe space for them to develop leadership skills, discipline, and a spirit of service, equipping them to be truly ready for life.”
He further encouraged adults in the community to step forward as mentors and leaders, reinforcing that the sustainability of these organizations relies on dedicated individuals willing to guide and inspire the next generation.
His Excellency commended the leadership of both associations and extended special recognition to Her Excellency Lady Sandra Williams, who serves as Patron of the Girl Guides Association of Antigua and Barbuda. Through initiatives such as the HALO GUIDING LIGHT AWARDS, Lady Williams continues to actively support both organizations in tangible and meaningful ways.
Following the service, His Excellency, along with the Commissioners of both the Girl Guides and the Boy Scouts, took the Eyes Right salute as members of the organizations marched through the community of All Saints.
