0

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a High Surf Advisory for Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands, warning of dangerous swells and rip currents affecting northern and eastern coastlines.

Timing of Impacts

  • Antigua & Barbuda: Friday morning – Saturday morning
  • Montserrat: Friday morning – Saturday dawn
  • Anguilla: Friday mid-morning – Saturday mid-morning
  • British Virgin Islands: Friday midday – Saturday evening

What to Expect

Forecasters say long-period swells will generate waves between 2–3 metres (6–10 feet), with some surges reaching close to 2.7 m (9 ft). Breaking surfs could top 1.8 m (6 ft).

The conditions are expected to trigger:

  • Strong rip currents capable of carrying even experienced swimmers out to sea
  • Localised coastal flooding and beach erosion
  • Damage to coral reefs and saltwater intrusion in low-lying areas
  • Hazardous conditions for small craft and marine businesses

Safety Advice

Authorities urge the public to avoid swimming on affected beaches and to use only lifeguard-supervised or sheltered southern beaches. Residents and visitors are also advised to stay away from rocky coastlines and reefs.

For those caught in a rip current, experts recommend:

  • Relax and float
  • Avoid swimming directly against the current
  • Swim parallel to the shore or wave for help
