The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued a High Surf Advisory due to moderate, long-period swells generating dangerous breaking waves and rip currents across northern and north-facing coastlines.
The advisory affects Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts, and Nevis, with wave heights reaching 2 to 3 metres (7–10 feet) and occasionally higher. Swells are moving from the north and are expected to persist until Thursday morning for Antigua and Barbuda.
Officials warn that the conditions pose life-threatening risks for swimmers and small craft operators, with possible beach erosion and localized coastal flooding. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid northern beaches and rocky shores, and only swim at sheltered beaches where lifeguards are present.
Those caught in rip currents are advised to stay calm, float, and swim parallel to the shore until free from the current.
Updates will be available on the Meteorological Service’s official website at antiguamet.com.
