Driver Cleared in Fatal Friars Hill Road Crash

A High Court jury has found Diondre Samuel not guilty of causing death by dangerous driving in the 2022 death of pedestrian Lashauna Bridgen.

Bridgen, a Jamaican national, was struck while crossing Friars Hill Road around 5:45 a.m. on 20 January 2022. The court heard she emerged from behind a parked SUV with high-beam lights on, and Samuel was driving to work at the time.

The defence argued the area was poorly lit and noted multiple fatalities had occurred there before lighting was installed. Prosecutors claimed Samuel had been speeding and under the influence of marijuana.

The jury found the evidence insufficient and acquitted him.

  1. So I guess that woman that got in the accident with the police that died will get the same verdict🤔

  2. She’s a Jamaican…her life doesnt matter in Antigua…. we all know it’s the truth….that’s the only reason he got off…smh…

  3. A jury found that there’s not sufficient evidence to convict him. That’s the law, not emotional but evidenced based. People must learn to accept the verdict. Not every fatal accident is a crime. My continued condolences to her family.

  4. I’m really struggling to understand how the jury could find him not guilty when a woman lost her life in this incident. It’s hard not to feel concerned about what message this sends regarding accountability on our roads. Shouldn’t there be consequences when someone is killed, regardless of the circumstances? My thoughts are with the victim’s family during this difficult time.

  5. Why is this place such perverted in justice? People will soon start murder and get away too? The prosecutions evidence seemingly is correct.

  6. Regardless of the verdict, a fatal crash leaves an indelible mark on so many lives. For Diondre Samuel, this means the legal chapter is closed, but for the families involved, the pain of losing a loved one from that 2022 Friars Hill Road incident continues. It’s a truly heartbreaking situation for all affected.

  7. It has started, where are you?. Jane Finch the guy that was murdered by Pita Pocket and countless others is just a case file..

  8. We are hostage in a sick environment ( silly stuff= never be true situation ) REMEBER SHEEPS ‘ KARMA DONT EXIST”

  9. have you noticed that when ever a person is hit by a vehicle the driver is always the first to be blamed like he is supposed to be watching people instead of the vehicles in front of him.. and then when you watch the people and run into something they say you not minding you business …

  10. what about her family now? He walks away from the case but they can’t walk away from the pain of losing a loved one? What is Justice? How do you define justice?

  11. What more can I say? He walked free, so I guess he wasn’t wrong! First and foremost why would she cross from behind a car at such a time?

  12. the driver is always the first to be blamed if she wrong she wrong no just walk cross the road like it belong to you…look first then cross

  13. More pedestrians crossing are needed on our highways. In addition we also need traffics lights that can be operated by pedestrians

  14. If anyone of the many persons calling form him to be guilty drove, you would think differently. A parked vehicle and a person emerging from behind that vehicle in dark clothing is always going to be hard for a driver to pick up. I wasn’t there neither were any of you, so saying what happened step by step we would never be able to say, but the driver of the other vehicle had a huge part to play by indicating to or stopping the driver of the incoming traffic.

  15. Once the vehicle was traveling more ran 20 MPH since it is a built up area he is guilty.

This was a simple case. Perhaps the Judge failed to direct the jury properly.

At 20 MPH it is highly unlikely if stroke the victim would die..

At 20 MPH breaking suddenly in any situation would reduce injury.
THE JURY OBVIOUSLY DID NOT CONSIDER THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF EVIDENCE.

  16. There is no defense that can convince me that someone driving to work that early in the morning on that road was driving within the 20 MPH speed limit.

The issue of high beam also works against the driver. The high beam should have caused him to stop or proceed with caution.

The Judge failed to look at the evidence and properly apply the Law. This is a case of serious negligence and injustice.

Was the Judge overwhelmed with fluff and not the basic tenants of the case?

  17. So if am driving minding my business, should I know someone is just going to suddenly come out from behind a parked car!!

  18. The prosecution have the burden of proof. If the evidence is not there for a conviction based on the evidence produced by the prosecution you can’t blame the law and the jurors

  19. @Fair play I know it is difficult but try and drive your car at 20 MPH and let me know if you think that under ANY circumstances you reasonably think that if you unexpectedly struck someone the person would succumb.

If you are driving and you encounter a high beam what should your course of action be?

Friars hill road is a straight road when did the driver encounter the high beam and what action did he take? How fast was he traveling after encountering the high beam?

  20. It was nothing but an unfortunate accident. She was my brother in law’s side chick and she had just gotten out of the vehicle that my sister loaned him. He even said that he had told her not to walk behind the vehicle.

She lost her life but his relationship and his family never recovered from the betrayal. It was nothing but an accident.

Furthermore, her family sued them both for the accident even though they paid to send her body back to Jamaica and send money for her family regularly.

Dash cam footage even shows she started walking at the front then changed her mind and walked at the back.

  21. It was an accident. He was driving under speed yes. She is known to cross roads just like that. I can recall a time on the work bus and she just walked cross the road just like that everybody on the bus was cursing like what’s wrong with her and the bus driver said it’s not the first time she do that. Another incident where i was with my friend she just walked cross the road just like that my friend had to hold a hard brakes to avoid hitting her. We gonna say and say that. The driver did not deliberately knock her down but he was under some serious speed and I blame the driver who dropped her off as well. No directive to give to let her cross the road and walk Infront of the vehicle. It sad nothing went for it but that driver didn’t willfully killed her. It was an accident. We need to stop this shit bout Jamaican cuz some y’all Jamaicans don’t even love y’all own. I hear how some y’all talk bout Jamaicans how them have badmind and all that so pleaseeeee easy dey Jackie.

  22. To the Jamaicans,
If that’s how y’all feel, like “y’all lives don’t matter in Antigua then do us a favor and go back ah aryou yard. ALL LIVES MATTER. “ALL” there was insignificant evidence to prove that he was driving under the influence and/or speeding. It is very unfortunate but this has NOTHING to do with NATIONALITY.
Not all justice comes from the law, cause if he is really guilty, god nah sleep.
Black people can be so illiterate SMH.

  23. Stop talking nonsense. If you all think that way, then tap a are you yard an na come ya. Case close k

  24. Her kidney was damaged her liver bruise kmft he was speeding if I were her family since as he walk free I would have her torment him!!! Her kidney was damaged her liver bruise kmft he was speeding if I were her family since as he walk free I would have her torment him!!!

  25. So he said no street light why was he sleeping he knew none there as an Antiguan citizenship I find this nonsense!!!!!I am disappointed So he said no street light why was he sleeping he knew none there as an Antiguan citizenship I find this nonsense!!!!!I am disappointed

    Smh

  26. mmmmmm so her life doesn’t matter

  27. It is strange that at this stage people still do not know that best practice suggest
1 when you exit a vehicle cross the street from the back of the vehicle.
2 Allow the vehicle to go and cross the road when it 8s safe to proceed.

The driver was at fault and although he was acquitted the family should pursue justice and bring a civil case against him for death by vehicle accident.
I just think this case is unfortunate. Mr Pompey a way you deh?
