The Ministry of Education has ordered the closure of all public schools Thursday as heavy rainfall continues to batter the island, triggering widespread flooding and safety concerns.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services upgraded its alert early Thursday, placing the twin-island nation under a flash flood watch. The advisory also covers nearby Leeward Islands, including Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands.

Officials said several schools across Antigua reported significant flooding, prompting the ministry to suspend classes for the day. Principals were advised to exercise caution when releasing students amid ongoing thunderstorms.

Parents and guardians were urged to collect children promptly and avoid leaving them outdoors while waiting for transportation. Authorities also warned residents to stay indoors where possible, avoid flooded roads and waterways, and continue monitoring official weather updates as the system persists.

  1. Wow! I don’t see the point in meteorological services, if effective warnings and coordination cannot be made. This is rather late notice. Would have been more convenient for parents to be warned so children could stay home and not be sent to school in the 1st place. But Antigua nice bad.

  2. That’s the right move. Except that some students parents are still home so unless work is dismissed too it may not serve convenient for some people

  3. Why are they now making this statement??? We were warned since yesterday about the flooding. Now children are stuck at school in inclimate weather
