The woman accused of killing nine-year-old Chantel Crump will have to wait until next year to learn if her case will go to trial.
Angela Mejia, who remains on remand at His Majesty’s Prison, appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel this week, but her committal hearing was postponed after her attorney, Wendel Alexander, failed to appear. The matter has been rescheduled for February 11, 2026.
The case stems from the March 15, 2025 discovery of Chantel’s body in bushes near her Weatherills home, hours after she was reported missing — a tragedy that sparked nationwide grief and calls for justice.

There are two cases I know will continue to be delayed, since the prosecutors are having hell with evidence
collected and they are Chantel and Asot case.
In Asot they hastily arrested this dude, but the complication of evidence spread across and inside the estate might make it difficult to get a guilty verdict.
In Chantel case yes the kidnapped and abduction case is clear, but murder! unless they know and have evidence not yet revealed to the public, as fingerprints and the true cause of death, we are in for a long bullshit ride.
Why are they abusing this woman’s constitutional rights like this, I fear this would happen to my fellow bloggers on this platform, my family and friends and whatever opposition exist at that time.
I request for the AG Steadroy Cutie Benjamin and its ABLP cabinet, with its legislature to enact laws and policy to allow representation/advocacy outside the local bar to be permitted to practice law in special situations like this, to represent an indigent defendant, who is charged with a serious crime, in which nearly the entire public opinion is biased/negative against the defendant, who is having horrific difficulties in acquiring legal counsel, and the government have failed to provide such within 24 hours.
I demand for this grave constitutional violation to stop. Protect this woman’s constitutional rights in the manner the criminals in the motor vehicle theft, fraud, abuse of office, larceny by trick, false pretense criminals in the vehicle criminal matter is getting.
Please take actions to secure due process. Please provide representation and the right to a speedy trial.
Wendel Alexander obviously has a very high case load of other court cases to deal with. Is he the only capable defence lawyer in Antigua?
If Wendel can’t cope with his workload, then give this particular case to someone else. Simple really!

Again, there are just too many delays, postponements and adjournments in our judiciary system – especially the high profile murder cases of the like of a customs officer and the politician Asot Michael.
