The Ministry of Health has imposed sweeping restrictions on Dr Griffin Benjamin, head of the ClareVue Psychiatric Hospital, ordering him not to leave Antigua and Barbuda and suspending him from all official duties.
In a letter from the Permanent Secretary, Dr Benjamin was directed to remain within the state’s borders unless granted prior written approval to travel. He must also hand over all institutional property, including keys and records, and is barred from entering government health facilities or accessing official systems.
The action follows a complaint concerning the confinement of an American University of Antigua (AUA) student at Clarevue in August, as well as what officials described as “other serious concerns” about his conduct.
The ministry stressed that the suspension is a precautionary measure. “This is a fact-finding process … and does not represent a finding of wrongdoing,” the letter stated.
Dr Benjamin, who took charge of Clarevue nine months ago, told reporters he is ready to resume his work of reforming the troubled institution. He said he informed his clinical team as soon as he received the suspension letter and is now on leave.
“For now, I’m enjoying some time off, but I stand ready to continue the much-needed transformation of Clarevue,” he said.
The restrictions have left Clarevue without its appointed leader at a time when the facility continues to face scrutiny over standards of care. Officials have not confirmed who will oversee operations during the inquiry or how long the restrictions will remain in force.

Good benji did too much at pmh in Dominica
Especially to councilor guy
That’s what happens when you step on Molwyn shoes. So we are holding him hostage or what¿ like the reporters say it more feels like a verdict has already been reached. What a drama
The esteemed doctor knows his job and he does it without fear or favor…
First there was a report of suspension then there was a denial by the Health Ministry, now there is evidence of a suspension letter with the kind of restrictions befitting only of a criminal
What is really going on at Clareview? Like everybody gone crazy. 🤪 😜
Will send him a fishing boat to get out of Antigua
He held Dominican woman for weeks a few years ago in the PMH psychiatric unit. He’s known for that
You are telling a man who is a professional that he cannot leave the country without your authorization? Tf do you think you are? Aye. Yall people laughable no wa. So there’s a red alert at the airport then?
Dr B you sis nothing we ng as far as I know. Just keep doing your job. Had you not been good at your job they would not have hired you in the first place.
Some people don’t like change and they don’t like to be challenged. I know you not hungry for their money
Call back Dr King!
This dude jus come from Dominica and want to come into an institution and change things without considering why things were done that way. He did away with social outreach programmes and took over matron office without any respect for his predecessors. He bring shame to DA pple.
I say good riddance. Antigua has their own homegrown psychiatrists.
Wait for the next press release…he wasn’t banned…just told not to live yhe Island until we tell him. Aka same thing. !!! Too much mess in a messy institution. Literally!!!
For a small country I find you people have a lot going on down there.so who is manning the hospital?I guess crazy people don’t need much attention?fix this now
fix this now
So why don’t they try interview him to hear his side of the story🤔
Doctors at hospital let a pregnant girl die and they had 2 other young lady died, nothing for that, but an American woman in college made a complaint and you holding someone hostage that didn’t give old man Joseph a report, Dr. B. please give him the report in all medical terms that he can’t understand, we need younger minds with more education and management skills, every dam thing is politics in antigua.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
Show me the court order.
What is the criminal charge?
Who advises our government officials?
It is really depressing to believe that the AG is the most senior active lawyer in the state of Antigua and Barbuda.
How could such a senior man who is the government’s chief legal advisor be constantly getting it so wrong.
Has he gone beyond senior and is now senile?
I can’t make any sense of the repeated blunders of the AG.
I am waiting for someone to show me something that the AG has gotten right during his tenure.
Hope it do not have to wait for too long.
But how did you get to antigua? And not allowed to travel? More money right? Hmmm. Mystery island. So small yet so mysterious.
The Doctor should go to the airport or seaport and attempt to depart.
If he is prevented from departing or encounter any Rowley type situation CALL WENDELL.
This is easy cite the Rowley situation in court and sue the Minister, AG, and Immigration authorities.
@audley. Once again you are demonstrating that you are not too bright. There was NEVER a denial about the suspension. The original report was that the Ministet Sir Molwyn Joseph had suspended him. All the subsequent press statement said was that the Minister did not suspend anyone as the Minister, as is the case with all Minister, had no legal authority to suspend anyone. That was the administrive duty of the PS.
Banning someone from government health facilities is drastic.
The AG has gotten quite a few things right; notorious among them: he identified a jumby that was in his presence and signed a passport form, enabling the Entity to be issued the document to legally travel between Antigua/Barbuda and the world. We did it first.
Why is this Dominican man always in a drama.
Why is this Dominican man always in a drama.
This Doctor seems to be doing a lot! The measures meet his doings. This is how we go about doing things
Why don’t we call up on the hospital as well? So much going on at the hospital why not get rid of Dr. Belle? Or doctors who’ve dealt with persons who end up and die? Hmmmm picking on other people?
We never knew who we have until they are gone. A king has no honor in his own country. Dr James King did excellent work at Clarvue Psychiatric Hospitals he was a professional and the best seen after Dr Matchurin resigned he cared for his patients and staff and was a no nonsense Administrator he knew his work and got result he is a phenomenal human being not without fault but his work always brought results so to let him go as we did was an oversight was a gross mistake he loves his work and the people of Antigua and Barbuda and I am sure to serve his people he will return we cannot run a country without the active presence of a Psychiatrists that is worth their salt and he certainly knows and is the best around
The good doctor is willing and eager to return to work at this hospital, what a commitment. Is he trying to avoid the possible embarassment on his return to Dominica if he is eventually fired. Why is he nor challenging his detention in Antigua which appears to be illegal. This man love Antigua. If this was done to him in Dominica without a court order he would be sueing left right and center, but again it is public knowledge that Dominica is not his favorite Country…..
