(Health Ministry mourns Matron Cynthia Byers)
The entire Management and Staff of the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment is in deep mourning following the unfortunate death of one of its most outstanding Healthcare Professionals, Nurse and Matron Cynthia Byers.
No amount of words can fully capture the enormous contribution that Matron Byers made to Antigua and Barbuda. Her exemplary service includes serving as a Nurse in Holberton Hospital and the Mount St. John’s Medical Centre in the Intensive Care Unit until she became the Matron of the Hannah Thomas Hospital. She was then assigned to be the Deputy Matron of Fiennes and was assigned to act as Matron of the Clarvue Psychiatric Hospital last week Monday.
Health Minister, the Honourable Sir Molwyn Joseph recalls the first time he had the opportunity to work with Nurse Byers, a remarkable daughter of the soul. He said “it was one of the most difficult time for this country as we grappled with the effects of Hurricane Irma in Barbuda. As Matron then, she speared no effort in ensuring as a Nurse, that the most comprehensive coverage was given to the Barbuda healthcare system to restore some semblance of normalcy on the island.”
The Minister also recalls that “at the very beginning of the fight against Covid-19, Matron Byers was a key person on the frontline at the V C Bird International Airport, ensuring that our borders were protected from the importation of the virus. She was a team player and was able to provide leadership during that period of time.” The Minister went on to say that his prayers are with the family, loved ones and friends and the Nursing fraternity who have lost a champion.
Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rhonda Sealey-Thomas worked with Matron Byers for many years and remembers her as a dedicated and hardworking individual while noting she will be greatly missed.
Medical Officer with responsibility for Epidemiology within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment, Dr. Anju Smith expressed her appreciation for the hard work and professionalism that Matron Byers exemplified.
President of the Antigua Barbuda Nursing Association, Soria Dupie-Winston who has been working along with Matron Byers in the fight against Covid-19 noted that “the Matron was a hard worker and a true professional in all senses”. She further stated that “the entire Nursing fraternity mourns the loss of Matron Byers and she will be greatly missed.”

Very sad to lose such an experienced medical professional to Covid 19. Sympathies to the family.
Ministry of Health – please reassure the public that staff, patients, visitors, volunteers, suppliers at Fiennes & Clarevue are isolating, been tested & contact tracing is ongoing.
With their nonsensical protocols, hiding cases, and lying about deaths this past 13 months.
Shame on all of them.
Stupid fool Minister Blood on you and the MOUSTACHE HANDS . YES I SAID IT . There could be no other outcome and MANY MORE TO COME UNFORTUNATELY because of your Criminally Negligent protocols .
RIP my dear cuz . I can still remember the long and wonderful conversation we had in the summer of 2019 . when i came home. My heart is very heavy but God knows best. The thing that i take comfort in is that there is hope for those who trust in the Lord and it is not good bye forever. Your memories will forever be edged in our hearts Cynthia LOVE Byers.
Matron Cynthia Byers will be deeply missed for her professionalism and experiences in the medical field.
