Health Minister Outlines Plans for Modernizing Primary Healthcare Facilities in Antigua
Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph has outlined plans for the revitalization of healthcare facilities in Antigua, with a focus on upgrading infrastructure, expanding services, and ensuring resilience to natural disasters.
Speaking on the ongoing refurbishment of the Clare Hall Clinic and other healthcare facilities, Minister Joseph reassured citizens that efforts were in progress to address existing issues and enhance services.
He stated, “I visited the clinic yesterday and I will be today again to be satisfied that it is ready and the problems that existed have been fixed.”
Highlighting the need for a paradigm shift in healthcare provision, Minister Joseph emphasized the transition from small, village-based clinics to comprehensive polyclinics offering a wide array of services.
He stated, “We have to move towards polyclinics that provide a wide regime of services to the public where doctors can be there almost fulltime.”
Moreover, Minister Joseph stressed the importance of integrating alternative energy sources into healthcare facilities to ensure continuity of services during emergencies. He stated, “We are putting solar energy in all our clinics… there is no reason why all services should come to a halt.”
Discussing plans to upgrade clinics like the Old Road Clinic, Minister Joseph outlined, “That clinic should be a polyclinic and should provide wider services… and one of the features of these clinics is that they must have living accommodation.”
Despite acknowledging the challenges ahead, Minister Joseph urged the public to remain patient, assuring them that the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary inconveniences.
He stated, “So, I know that there is an issue in terms of all the clinics that are working and so forth, some of the clinics that are out of commission… but it is the way to go.”

It’s refreshing to hear from Minister Joseph. He seemed to have returned from his China trip with a new found desire to help the people of Antigua with our lack of good health care.
Were you enlightened by the Chinese clinics, or did you secure a loan from China?
