Harold Lovell’s Weak Leadership: A Dismissive Response to UPP’s Struggles

In a recent appearance on the Knight@Night show, Harold Lovell, former leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP), once again shamefully failed to show any real leadership qualities as he dodged pressing questions about the serious issues plaguing his party.

This appearance came at the heels of a political pummeling of Alex Browne and the UPP party, highlighted the increasing doubts
about Lovell’s effectiveness as a leader and his ability to move the UPP forward.

Lovell’s refusal to take responsibility for the turmoil within his party the chaos he created and the lack of a clear vision for the future speaks volumes about his ineffectiveness as a leader.

When questioned about the internal strife and disarray within the UPP, Lovell avoided any direct answers, opting instead to give vague, evasive responses. The fact that he is unwilling or unable to address the deepening problems facing his party suggests a leader who is out of touch with the realities of the situation. Mr. Dane Knight
said openly he was sorry for Mr. Lovell.

One of the most telling moments of the interview came when Lovell stated that he has no intention of challenging Jamal Pringle for the leadership of the UPP. While he claims to softly support Pringle’s leadership, this passive approach reveals a lack of ambition and vision for the future of the party.

Lovell’s decision to step aside without any real challenge or alternative plan is the ultimate sign of weakness, signaling to the public and his party members that he is content to let others take the reins while he simply sits back and observes.

Furthermore, Lovell’s stance to crantravene the UPP’s constitutional is deeply troubling. He suggested that the party should abort its constitution and make peace with Giselle Isaac to maintain the status quo.

This feebleness, and weak response betrayed the inner grouping of the party that called for his return hoping that he was going to lead the party again and advance their promotion within the party.

Lovell’s tenure as UPP leader has been marked by a string of failures, and the cracks within the party are becoming more apparent with each
passing day. Resigning from the leadership time after time, only to return in a bid for political relevance, seems to have been nothing more than a political stunt that is not working.
Even worse, Lovell’s claim that the people of All Saints West are supporting him seems increasingly hollow.
His leadership, once seen as a potential saving grace for the UPP, has instead become an anchor weighing the party down.
There are growing murmurs within the UPP ranks and among its supporters that Harold Lovell’s
political career is nothing more than an unsuccessful venture. Described by some as a “spent force,” his leadership is now regarded by many as weak, ineffective, and disconnected from the needs of the party and the people. The harsh reality is that Lovell is now a washed-up former politician, whose influence has all but evaporated, and the UPP is beginning to realize this.

  1. The writer of this article is clearly delusional—just another lab rat under the ALP spell. The last time I checked, the party leader is Jamal Pringle, not Harold Lovell. You’re directing your energy at the wrong person.
Lovell is a statesman, and if you had any common sense, you would understand that he doesn’t see it as his place to comment, nor is he responsible for the mess the party executive has created. The fact is, Pringle may be a nice guy, but he lacks the leadership qualities needed right now. The sooner he acknowledges that, the better it will be for the party.

    2). Lovell has no balls
    3). Lovell has no backbone
4). Lovell claims to be a lawyer but is ok with discarding his patty’s CONSTITUTION because of reasons 1-3

  4. Look, unless another political party comes to the forefront of Antiguan politics, then this country has to make do with an opposition that’s in dire need of an injection of new blood and new ideas.

Gaston Browne must be the most fortunate democratic leader in the Western Hemisphere, bar none!

Anyone who’s well travelled and well versed in global politics understand that whst he gets away with and DOESN’T do, he wouldn’t get away with, unless he ventured into the current mess of American politics.🤣

However, Antiguans do have hope – if as we now expect – that his supporters will hold him and the ABLP to account for all their recent monetary promises, because anyone else on the outside and looking in, haven’t got a cats chance in hell…

  5. Does the author realize that Mr. Lovell isn’t the leader of the party? Mr Pringle is…as Lovell acknowledges. What’s the problem?

  7. Mr. Knight hates Pringle, Giselle and the Women’s Forum. Serpent who claim to be a UPP member allow Dane to undermine and further splinter UPP.

Mr. Knight a try fu prop up Lovell and the WINKKUP PASTOR to stage a coup against the DULY ELECTED PRINGLE AND GISELLE, but it can never happen. The Chairman nah fraid he

  8. Criminals are usually uncomfortable whenever the Police are present and that’s what I’m observing with these ALP thieves. If Mr. Spencer had not feared their hooligan and terrorist behavior, quite a few of them would have served prison time because Mr. Lovell was willing to allow the courts to function fairly. All this commom place thievery wouldn’t be in our midst. The Alfa Nero would be making her regular calls to the island; Odebretch would would’ve never graced our shores. Just imagine, for once, that crooks didn’t have anything to do with our Passports, especially the Diplomatic ones. Nobody would’ve had a certain signature to forge and no Foundation could fleece us of $5mil. Nigel Christian would still be employed at the Customs Dept. and Asot Michael would’ve been imprisoned too but he would still be alive and that is the real reason why Mr. Lovell is vilified.

  9. The writer of this article is very misleading. Harold Lovell is currently not the leader of the UPP opposition party. Jamal Pringle is the current leader. Himself and the chair person of the party are the source of the problem the party is sadly facing today. The sooner they realize this is the better for the party. They need to proceed with the convention next month so conscious person can vote the right way to save the party, putting Harold Lovell back as the Leader. Take my advice. The ABLP ‘s biggest nightmare is Harold Lovell. We must stop our stupid personal agendas and do the right thing and save the UPP.

  10. @ Rovi,
    You left out a couple.

The former chairman of the investigation of the FILA monies that were ripped off, said a now powerful MP would have been jailed if Baldwin Spenser did not put aside the findings.

    Let him walk free.

  11. Honesty
1 Lovell is desirous of leading the UPP. But is to weak to sat it publicly.
2 Lovell coming back has depend the division within the UPP.
3 Lovell did not make a difference before, and the UPP will get what they got before if Lovell is selected as leader.
4 Lovell has no fresh inovative tactics based on his campaign strategy presently.
5 The UPP cabinet is out of touch with reality.

  12. I like this article, the writer is so correct, even though a lot of people may look at things differently,Mr.Lovell doesn’t display any leadership qualities, and does he outline what he will do for the economy of Antigua and Barbuda, but under the Gaston Browne administration you can see a lot of progress taking place in the country…

  13. The Asians, Serians, Caucasiana and other Nationalities definitely love to sit back and enjoy the mud slinging and wallowing in the mud by Antiguans, as they go after each other for poliTRICKtans, lodge members of the same order who are friends and companions behind closed doors, while Antiguans eat crow, get the scraps from their tables while those Asians, Serians, and other Nationalities get the better shares as the National pie is divided up and shared!

  14. I am tired of warning Gaston brown not to pen these articles then blog to himself under different names and he just won’t listen.

  15. Lovell is enjoying all the negativity about Pringle.
As a senior party member he is not defending Pringle or calling on party supporters to have restraint.
Lovell wants to be king of the ashes.
LOVELL WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND. GO AND BEG JOAN PARDON. AND INVITE HER BACK INTO THE PARTY AND SUPPORT HER FOR LEADERSHIP..

  16. @mechesidec
And who is “Joan” supposed to be coming back to lead? The DNA elements in the UPP? You really don’t know how Miss Massiah left the UPP, do you? Or do you want to believe your own version of the story of how she left?

It is unfortunate that the UPP never let the voters know what really happened with that situation. Upp became such a closed door party, everything was a in house affair. Because of that, the public never knew what Miss Massiah did to the UPP why she was put out of the party. It is this closed door society that is hurting the party now.
Lovell seems to be suffering from that syndrome. He cannot see himself boldly going to the leadership and persuading them that Pringle cannot lead them to victory. He told Knight he was leaving the interview because he was ‘uncomfortable’ with the callers pointed views. That was a very strange word for any politician in the hunt to use, and it showed how much he might not be the evangelist for this phase of UPP’s recovery.

  17. @Question, Sir. Why did you come back?

The last portion of your statement is on point as I found it inconceivable for a potential leader or candidate with so many years of experience to state publicly that he feels “uncomfortable” listening to the concerns of the callers, who evidently are supporters of his party.

But to your point in the first part, Joanne did nothing that would warrant her expulsion, I don’t care what it is. I heard the story from both sides, including him. As I asked him many years ago, “Why would you want to expel your elected member who was batting so well for your side in the lower house?

After all, the other two at the time were planning their exit at the dissolution of parliament. So, she would have been the only electable in the next election cycle. I heard that she is rude and didn’t pay her dues, etc. How silly is that when there are others who didn’t pay as well?
Politics is not about emotions; but rather strategy.”
He told me that he doesn’t have the final say as to who is expelled. It’s the executive. What malarchy!

If it were up the current leader of the ABLP, he would have exercised his veto power and autocratically overridden any decisions reached by the executive as he is the leader.
Right there, I realized that he didn’t possess the qualities of a leader.

Nice guy with to converse, yet lacks the ability to lead and bring people together.
Trust me, as quiet as it’s kept, he’s out there, trying to form a coalition to take back leadership. It will not happen.
