Former Hadeed Motors Employee Found Guilty in SUV Fraud Scheme

A long-serving employee of Hadeed Motors has been convicted on six fraud-related charges for stealing and illegally selling an SUV using falsified company records.

Dylan Simon, a clerk and sales representative at the dealership from 1998 to 2020, was found guilty by Justice Stanley John of electronic forgery, forgery, uttering, larceny by a clerk, obtaining money by false pretences and money laundering. He has been remanded until sentencing on Dec. 11.

Prosecutors said Simon manipulated internal systems in early 2020 to make it appear that a Suzuki Vitara had been purchased with a non-existent cheque, then issued documents that allowed the vehicle to be removed from the compound. He later sold the SUV to a used-car dealer for $55,000 and received another vehicle and cash as part of the exchange.

The scheme was uncovered during an audit after the company reopened from its COVID-19 lockdown. Investigators found several irregular transactions linked to Simon, including doctored cheque records. He resigned after failing to explain the discrepancies.

Simon had previously been fined $100,000 in 2023 for electronic forgery in a separate case at the same company.
