Loop News – Guyanese Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton has said Daniel Seeram, Chairman of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) Democratic Council, should resign over allegations that he assaulted his wife.
Norton told reporters on Thursday that the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) – where Seeram sits as an executive member—does not tolerate or condone any form of violence.
“We are a party in which there are a lot of women and we oppose vehemently any attempt to embarrass, assault or do anything to women,” he stated.
“As it relates to the resignation, I think Daniel Seeram understands the nature of what has happened. It is true it is not the first time and I will leave it to him to do the decent thing.”
Pressed further by reporters at the opposition’s media conference, Norton said the party has not formally told Seeram that he needed to leave.
“We have not said to him, look, you need to go. You must understand the regional system. When somebody becomes a regional chairman or a councillor, there is no mechanism that exist to remove that person.
It is something that I think people don’t recognize. If today or tomorrow he says he is not stepping down, and we say you have to go, does it follow that he will go? It doesn’t follow,” Norton stated.
He said the party is moving to address the matter in the Central Executive.
A disciplinary committee was formed on Wednesday night to examine the allegations against Seeram.
This is not the first time that Seeram has been accused of a domestic incident.
Last year, he was brought before the courts over allegations that he threatened his father-in-law with his licensed firearm.
He was placed on GYD$20,000 bail.
