Kaieteur News-  President Irfaan Ali announced on Wednesday that, beginning this year, the government will pay the full examination fees for all students writing their Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations

The Head of State made the announcement during a public meeting in Region Three, which was held at the West Demerara Secondary School. “As I speak to you now, parents are preparing to pay for their children’s CXC fees. You are already putting aside the money, right? Well, I have good news for you, with effect from this year’s CXC, the government will pay in full, the cost for at least eight subjects for every single child in the public and private school system,” he said on Wednesday.

“These are the policies that we are embracing, this is the future that we are creating. We don’t need an event for us to invest in the people and their future; we are not a seasonal presence in your lives.” Prior to the President’s announcement, a parent would pay around $45,000 for eight CSEC subjects.

  2. Guyana’s Leader is looking out for the future generations of Leaders. Building from within, from the ground up.At least he is spending the people’s money widely and wisely.Enriching the people, not himself, wife, son and concubines. As some in Antigua are doing.

  3. Oil money really a talk plus elections are around the corner in Guyana. Tremendous incentives. Might be setting a benchmark for other Caribbean countries to follow.

  4. I think this is a great initiative by the President in Guyana. All the other islands may not be able to afford the same but there are other creative methods than could be deployed. For example, a govt loan could be available for students taking the exam and they will only repay for the subjects that they fail. It could also be in the form of a grant for students whose parents are making less than a certain amount annually.

Lots of possibilities exist but I can see a new wave where the younger generation is expecting more from their governments.
