Ground Broken for TFA Athletic Club Development Near Sir Vivian Richards Stadium

A new sports and leisure complex is set to take shape near the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, with the groundbreaking for the TFA Athletic Club taking place on Friday morning.

The four-phase development, led by Antiguan citizen Ambassador Ali, aims to boost sports tourism and improve local facilities in Antigua and Barbuda.

Sports Minister Daryll Matthew said the project has the potential to bring significant benefits.

“This facility is not only a sports-related project but also has the ability to impact tourism and enhance the overall quality of life here in Antigua and Barbuda,” he said.

The first phase will feature three paddle courts and a 7,300-square-foot gym, while the second phase will include an aquatic centre with a 50-metre swimming pool.

A 50-room hotel and a golf course are planned for the final phases of the project.

Tim Perkins the project coordinator noted the importance of such facilities, noting that over half of Antigua’s population is under 30.

“This statistic underscores the need for fitness, sports, and social activities. A facility like this will greatly enhance these opportunities,” he said.

Construction is expected to begin in early 2025, once approvals are finalised. Ambassador Ali, a key figure in the project, confirmed that designs are complete and work is progressing on securing necessary licences.

The development is seen as a major step forward in positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a destination for sports tourism while addressing local needs for fitness and recreational spaces.

  1. In Gainesville, Florida there is a similar indoor facility. It is booked constantly. I hope they have similar success. It is quite a expensive undertaking

  2. I doubt the golf course and hotel will ever happen but the more fitness facilities, the better.

@Mr Byam: Always complaining about the “foreigners” aren’t you? I find that very funny especially if your last name really is Byam!

  3. The last “ground faking” was for the Barbuda airport and we all know what became of that.

Only faking going on these days is an orgasm from rag tag and some Dot (that can’t) See

  4. Who are the entity building this out?
What is their background in sports facility development?
Presumably this is a private enterprise and the facilities will not be free of charge to local sports clubs/people?
Any MP’s have an ‘interest’ in the project?
What are development staging dates agreed with cabinet for concessions and continuance of same? ( To avoid the plethora of trumpeted projects where nothing/little happened)
    Who is Amb. Ali?

Curious questions whose answers should be shared with the public for this and any project in the pursuit of transparency.
    Thank you.

  5. Being so close to Sir Viv stadium, you mentioned a hotel, why not include a full track and field facility? You see how much these top track and field athletes enjoy themselves every year in the Bahamas even though it can be a bit windy, can you imagine them competing in a first class track and field arena with 365 beautiful beaches in the back ground and weather they can only dream of? They will be back every year, plus we will be able to bid for and host many regional and world athletics events.

  6. An athletic club allowing access to all sports and fitness enthusiasts would be great. Hope it comes to fruition.

  7. How come there is a need for a new golf course?? Cedar Valley is primarily owed by the government and is in desperate need of funds, repairs and new management to keep this 40+ year old course open. Why don’t they concentrate on this ?. Maybe the new investment would be better off having a plan like a ” Top Golf ” type of driving range which incorporates bars / restaurants etc, that would generate extra enjoyment for both locals and tourists .

The fitness centre, pockle ball and swimming complex is an excellent move, Antiguan swimming has gone from strength to strength over the years and keeping more people fit will hopefully have a benefit for the health services in years to come.

Maybe you offer the investors some of the government shares in Cedar Valley to improve the facility and course and rely on their expertise to bring it back to a great standard.

    Just thinking!
