The COVID-19 death toll in Grenada continues to rise.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health says seven COVID deaths were recorded in a single day increasing the country’s total from five to 12.
The deceased, all of whom had comorbidities, were confirmed cases of COVID-19, ranging in age from 26 to 85 years. The Ministry of Health has confirmed that five of the deaths were among patients admitted to the General Hospital, with one death at the Princess Alice Hospital and the seventh person dying at home.
Data provided by the Ministry of Health indicates that four of the deceased are females and three, males. Four of the deceased were residents of St George while the remaining three were from St Andrew.
At the time of this release, more than 20 COVID-19 positive patients are hospitalised, with a few of them listed in critical condition.
Minister of Health Nickolas Steele, during the programme “Perspectives” this morning spoke about the four additional deaths that were recorded in the last 24 hours. He says a person 30 years and under is among the deceased while the majority are 50 years and above.
In addition, on Saturday, a baby less than one year old tested positive for COVID-19 along with the grandmother.
The minister says health care workers are going to have some very dark and difficult days ahead of them as the virus is doing exactly what it has done in other islands.
Deaths have been doubling and cases are doubling exponentially in Grenada.
He notes the island is seeing very little COVID cases in persons who are vaccinated. The minister says there are healthcare workers who have become infected with the virus. No definite number was given but Steele says one of the health workers are of concern with respect to condition but all others are stable.
There is no community in Grenada that does not have COVID-19 right now and significantly with testing, more young people are showing up with the virus because they are mobile and able to visit testing centres.
Those of concern are the older citizens and shut-ins who have not been able to leave their homes but have contracted the virus due to it being carried home to them.
Steele says Grenadians have to come to terms that over the next couple of says it is going to be darker.
He adds Grenada might get to capacity of all beds being filled by next week.
Grenada has already crossed 1,000 active cases.
Health officials have confirmed that the majority of deaths being recorded is among the unvaccinated. The Ministry of Health continues to encourage Grenadians to get vaccinated as this reduces the risk of severe disease, hospitalisation and death attributed to COVID-19. (LOOP NEWS)
