Grade Six Class Donates To Student Affected By House Fire

The grade six class of the T. N. Kirnon School donated food and toiletries to one of their classmates whose home was destroyed in a fire at John Hughes late last year.

The gesture was done as part of the students’ School Based Assessment (SBA) with support from their Social Studies Teacher Lovette Thomas.

“We went out to the supermarket and we solicit from customers”, said Thomas.

“The students have different feedback from meeting people. Some were giving, some ignored them, and I had to calm them down and let them know that all is a part of meeting different people from different walks of life”, the teacher said.

The students said they were happy for the opportunity to help their classmate in his time of need.

One student said some of the people approached were disrespectful, “but so many people helped us in such great ways. We got so much stuff for Shaheem”.

Another student said his takeaway from the experience is if his home had burned down “someone would have helped me and donated things to me depending on how they feel”.

Shaheem’s mother Allison Ceasar expressed thanks to “all who helped me throughout this ordeal, thanks to the T. N. Kirnon School, also thanks to the Epicurean Supermarket who donated these food items to my family”.

Teacher Thomas said she wanted the children to learn “they are supposed to be the first responder whenever there is a tragedy, they can learn to give, learn to share love, learn to show that they care”.
