The government says its decision to install additional speed humps at locations throughout the island has helped save lives.
The Cabinet says it has learned that a few vocal drivers have been complaining publicly about new speed bumps.
“They placed strategically to slow automobile drivers where populations of pedestrians share the space with moving cars,” a statement said.
“The Cabinet is of the view that the speed bumps have achieved their objectives, and may have saved lives or limbs from those who disobey speed limits with disregard.”

In the City of St. John’s, the speed limit remains at 20 miles per hour; and, in rural districts, outside of villages, the speed limit does not exceed 40 mph.

When the gray hill main road will get ??? 3 years and still asking . Can we the residence purchase them from the distributors??
Let them complain….speed bumps should remain!
I agree, let the speed bumps remain forever! Best idea the government has had since the installation of public trash bins. Good job PM Browne!
Let them complain?!!!
I’m complaining and I don’t drive my vehicle like an ass on the public roads.
These speed bumps are an annoyance. Placing these stupid things all over Antigua absolutely makes driving on these streets even more dreadful than it already was.
And I don’t mind speed bumps in key areas, but these hideous things and the unnecessary amount of them, are a nightmare and a major inconvenience for the average, law abiding motorist. If we are going to utilise speed bumps, use those that won’t cause further damage to our vehicles; my goodness, they already have to go through so much with the kind of roads that we have here…
Notes From A Native Son Of The Rock! “The dynamic, pioneering aspect, the inventive, discoverer-of-new-worlds aspect common to every national bourgeoisie is here lamentably absent.” ― Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth!
LEST WE REMEMBER! Road Infrastructural Rehabilitation and Institutional Capacity Building for Antigua and Barbuda: “GOAB recognises the importance of road safety for human resource and economic development. The GOAB’s commitment is set out in its Medium-Term Development Strategy 2016-2020. Goal 11 of the Strategy seeks to “make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.” Target 11.2 seeks to: “By 2030, provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons.”’
Clearly the Government, Cabinet, Minister and PS got ahead of the Engineers and Technocrats! Where are the Traffic and Road Safety Engineers! Does A&B have that Capacity either as designers or builders!
Any Road Engineer worth his salt would have impressed upon the Powers That Be that in this The International Decade for People of African Descent 2015 -2024 there are other geometric and “Traffic Calming” road designs, which unobtrusively reduce not only speed but also the carrying circulation capacity within a specified Time and Space! The installation of new round-a-bouts on the two upgraded highways/roadways should demonstrate to the driving and pedestrian public the use of some geometric and traffic calming designs!
First let’s dispense with what have been installed on the roads! Any qualified Engineer would have advised that those are best located in Parking Lots, which this mere voice would not even recommend since it is a well researched fact that traffic humps, which are of a minimum 4 (four) feet wide and 4 inches high, placed at pedestrian crossings produce a much better traffic solution! It would be recommended that traffic humps not be placed on: Major Roadways; Bus routes; Collector or arterial streets; Cul-de-sacs or dead-ends; Emergency response routes; Next to Police and Fire Stations, Clinics and Our Public and Private Hospitals; Sharply curved and Steep Roads; Roads used by Trucks and Taxis in Tourism Areas! Traffic humps of a minimum 6(Feet) wide and no higher than 6 inches placed at pedestrian crossings would be recommended for areas with Schools! Staying away from prescriptions for GoAB has been intentional over the years! This is an attempt to bring some Engineering Technology and Road Calming Safety Measures into the discussion! Will not get into any other engineering geometric designs! That will be left to Public Works as part of its role and mandate to build and maintain a safe and efficient road system for all road users and the Antigua and Barbuda Public and for which it has obtained International Funding!
This mere voice has lamented the lack of technical, scientific and engineering knowledge at the upper reaches of GoAB especially where the voices of the technocrats are stiffed to assuage the peccadilloes and ministerial sins of omission and commission!
“The Afrocentric method considers that no phenomena can be apprehended adequately without locating it first. A phenom must be studied and analyzed in relationship to psychological time and space. It must always be located. This is the only way to investigate the complex interrelationships of science and art, design and execution, creation and maintenance, generation and tradition, and other areas bypassed by theory.” – Dr. Molefi Asante! Afrocentricity: The Theory of Social Change!
How is this metric measured? How many lives ah e been saved and how the hell would we know this. This is the sort of bullshit that comes from officialdom that I cannot fathom.
It is destroying our cars and we don’t get free cars like you guys do.
Speed bumps should have a gradient of at least 1:10 but we have some mountain ranges across our roads that destroys front ends and Tyres – just to to Blizzard and see for yourself.
Do these ubiquitous bumps take emergency vehicles into consideration? No. Some minister come up with the idea after he saw some pretty pictures on the Internet.
How are ambulances and fire tenders to navigate these obstacles at high speeds? Leave technical decisions to technical people and engineers please!
Thank you!
Well said
I am very happy that the government installed speed bumps, I wish they would install more. They won’t cause damage to any cars that are going slow. Also, these speed bumps will slow down the Jamaican and Haitian drivers that have immigrated (probably illegally) into Antigua recently – they have a more wild driving culture in those countries.
Somebody going to have to “manners” these immigrants. They have to leave “wild driving culture” behind or go back where they come from.
You are soo correct. If one goes slow there is no issue with getting over the bumps.
I surprised that nobody has pointed out that driving over these speedbumps at the speed limit is no more uncomfortable than the usual lumps and holes in Antiguan roads. In fact the faster you go, the less you feel them, so instead of slowing down the speeding drivers, they may actually increase their speed.
On top of that, these speedbumps are increasing the fuel consumption of every driver, hardly compatible with the government’s aim to become more green
Speedbumps save lives? Seriously? More like screwing up ppl car
How about you FIX the roads before you put down those speedbumps?? Y’all ever see speedbumps being placed right next to a pot hole?! Christ! Only in Antigua… 🤦🏽♀️ I am not against the installation of speed bumps where they are necessary, however, they are putting these things everywhere. EVERYWHERE! It seems as if someone donated some speed bumps to the government and they are trying their best to use them up. We already have to deal with the state of the roads and now these half dead speed bumps are not helping the situation at all. Where I live there is a speed bump after a corner… AFTER A CORNER on a junction! Explain the logic behind that one to me please. To prevent accidents? That make any sense?
The masses will never be satisfied.. Reality only hits whenever that person finds themselves in a critical position…. I have always learnt that prevention is much better than to cure….. There is a cliche that if i had known i would not have done it…. Too many lives have been lost especially young and innocent ones from speeding and reckless driving….. The clarion call has gone out to us the drivers, many times to be responsible, yet still we ignore such calls. So the govt has done the right thing to implement as much as possible the speed bumps…. More are needed in areas like Parliament Drive, Federation Rd Grays Farm etc….. Antigua is definitely too small to have such reckless and fast driving….
While they at it..put some on Old Parham Road, Friars Hill road, All Saints Road..D road with old hospital..any road with wider stretches that they do all the speeding on..including the ambulances and fire trucks. Pray they mek it to save lives and reckless drivers stop
