 – The Antigua and Barbuda Ex-Servicemen’s Association officially launched the 2025 Poppy Appeal today at the Cenotaph of the Antigua Grammar School. The event highlighted remembrance, national pride, and the ongoing commitment to support veterans who have served with distinction.

Representing the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, Sir Clare Roberts KCN, KC, Governor General’s Deputy, delivered the keynote address and formally launched the appeal.

Sir Clare read John McCrae’s timeless poem In Flanders Fields and noted that the red poppy in the poem reminds us that freedom was purchased with sacrifice, and that the duty to care for those who served is now ours.

In his message, Mr. Philmore Mullin, Chairman of the Ex-Servicemen’s Association, reaffirmed the Association’s mission of raising awareness and funds to assist veterans in need.

He emphasized that the organization’s work ensures the sacrifices of Antigua and Barbuda’s servicemen and women, as well as those across the Commonwealth, are never forgotten and that this reality should inspire the public to support the Appeal wholeheartedly.

Mr. Mullin later pinned the first poppy on the Governor General’s Deputy, symbolizing the official start of the 2025 Appeal.

The Governor General’s Deputy also infused life into the appeal by starting it with a donation on behalf of his wife Lady Roberts and himself.

The short but meaningful programme was chaired by PRO Retired Major Ivor Walker and featured the participation of key national leaders and institutions.

Among them were Mr. Everton Jeffers, Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr. Samuel Roberts, Principal of the Antigua Grammar School, Major Samuel Roberts, Head of the National Cadet Corps, and Chairman Mr. Philmore Mullin. Each dignitary laid a wreath at the Cenotaph.

A central feature of this year’s launch was the participation of the Antigua Grammar School, ensuring that the younger generation is actively engaged in carrying forward the lessons of sacrifice, courage, and national service.

The ceremony also included the traditional recital of the Creed, reminding all present of the enduring symbolism of the poppy as both a tribute to those who gave their lives and a call to preserve peace.

The launch concluded with remarks by the Association’s Deputy Chairman Mr. Everton Michael who reiterated the call to support the Ex-Servicemen’s Association through poppy purchases or generous donations..

  1. The money raised goes towards a worthy cause like assisting the family and spouses of fallen heroes so please support.

  2. The sacrifices of Antiguans and Barbudans in global wars don’t get talked about enough. The poppy appeal keeps their memory alive.

  3. The poppy appeal may be small here compared to other countries, but the meaning is just as powerful. We owe it to our veterans.

  4. I am not a fan of these old folks that loved the queen of England that well when they were technically slaves, that went to fight in world war 1 ( it’s really tribal war 1 , they just want to differentiate white people violence different than African wars) to fight Hitler, they was insulted and put at the front as target practice for the enemy and served as dishwashers, only when the the depletion of white soldiers they were given guns, and Hitler telegraph England to ask if it’s so low the going that they arming monkeys with guns to go kill white people? Upon their return home nothing was given to them, hence their poverty today, but white soldiers got compensations, you can remember the late Camacho’s that had that old gas station on all saints road? He was given large tracks of lands under the colonial governance of Antigua under England rule. V.C Bird made a mistake in not taking back some of these lands from the Camacho’s and the Shoulz family.
These misguided young men at that time that went to war to maintain British power was rudderless without ideology, they were not educated, did you saw how the late mahamadali reject fighting the Asians during Vietnam war? He said to them my war is in America for equal rights against his true enemy the white man.

We should have another side to this occasion at the cenotaphs where we call for reparations for the family of these fallen misguided soldiers.
