Management, staff, and residents of Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital were graced with the presence of His Excellency, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams and Lady Williams on Wednesday 20th December 2017 as the institution held its annual Christmas programme.
Among those in attendance were Permanent Secretary within the Ministry of Health and the Environment Joan Carrott, Superintendent of the Institution Candine Roberts, Matron Althea Blair, and other senior medical officers and Heads of Department within the Ministry to include Chief Executive Officer of Mount Saint John Medical Centre Gary Thomas and other senior medical officers.
Superintendent Roberts highlighted the challenges and plans for Clarevue.
“Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital presently houses 109 patients, 77 males and 42 females. This institution has a patient-centered approach which involves not only medication for patients but focuses on the entire individual, medically, socially and dietary,” stated Roberts.
She further revealed the nutritional and social aspects of the Institution.
“Our care not only involves medication treatment but also nutritional which are conducive to the patient and the social therapy will assist to reintegrate them into society after treatment.
“Families and communities must play a pivotal role in order to reduce the burden on the institution, socially, emotionally and financially. Steps must also be taken to reduce stigma and discrimination for persons living with mental health issues in our society,” added Roberts.
The Superintendent particularly emphasized the need for relatives of those who are institutionalised to support their loved ones whether by visits or in rendering financial support.
