ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Governor General Sir Rodney Williams called on aspiring physicians to approach medicine with compassion and humility as he delivered the feature address at the American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine’s White Coat Ceremony on Friday.
The ceremony, held at the AUA Convention and Conference Center, marked a key milestone for medical students as they transition into the clinical phase of their training.
Drawing on more than four decades of experience in family medicine, sports medicine and aviation medicine, Sir Rodney spoke about the meaning behind the white coat and the responsibilities that come with it.
“For some, it is simply a garment, but for those of us in medicine, it is a covenant. It represents trust, the sacred trust placed in you by patients who will reveal their fears, their vulnerabilities, and sometimes their very lives into your hands,” he said.
He told the students that while medicine continues to evolve through scientific advances and new technologies, the human connection between doctor and patient remains central to the profession.
“No algorithm can replace compassion. No machine can replace a listening ear. No prescription can substitute for respect. The most powerful words you will ever say to a patient are often the simplest, ‘I am here,’” Sir Rodney said.
The Governor General also acknowledged the support of families and loved ones, noting that the milestone reflected not only the achievements of the students but also the sacrifices made by those who encouraged them throughout their studies.
The event was chaired by Dr. Hani Morcos, who served as master of ceremony. Among those attending were Dr. David Graham, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, Dr. Matthew Hogan, dean of clinical sciences, members of the university’s faculty and administration, as well as families and friends of the students.
Dr. Graham also addressed the ceremony, congratulating the students on reaching the next stage of their medical education and encouraging them to approach clinical training with professionalism and dedication to patient care.
The White Coat Ceremony is a longstanding tradition in medical education that highlights the ethical responsibilities and commitment to service expected of physicians. The event concluded with the formal presentation of white coats to the students, symbolizing their transition from classroom learning to hands-on clinical practice.
Founded in 2004, the American University of Antigua College of Medicine trains physicians from around the world and has become a major contributor to the global healthcare workforce while strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s role as a hub for international medical education.
