The official launch of the groundbreaking book Cricket, Race, and Economics in West Indian Society: Where a Bat, a Ball, and a People’s Destiny Intersect took place on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Julees Restaurant. The event was graced by the presence of His Excellency, the Governor General of Antigua and Barbuda, Dr. Rodney Williams, whose attendance brought distinction and honour to the occasion.

The book is co-authored by two distinguished Antiguan academics: Dr. Harold R. Harris, originally from Willikies, and a retired professor of History, and Dr. Elijah M. James, originally from Newfield and a retired Professor of Economics. Together, they examine the intersections of sport, race, identity, and economics, providing critical insights into the role of cricket in shaping West Indian society. A copy of the book was formally presented to the Governor General, His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams who highlighted the national significance of this contribution.

Produced and coordinated by Ms. Koren Norton, the launch featured an engaging program hosted by Mr. Dwayne Simon as Master of Ceremonies. The day included spirited steelpan performances by Mr. Jahfari Hazlewood, a powerful spoken word presentation by Mr. Glen Toussaint, and reflections from guest speakers, Mr. Vere HillMr. Zorol Barthley and Mr. Lestroy Samuel. Dr. Harris offered a moving reading from the book, followed by a book signing and lively audience engagement.

“This book is more than a study of cricket—it is a reflection on how sport shapes the social and economic fabric of our region,” said Dr. James.

Adding her own reflection, producer and coordinator Koren Norton stated, “Cricket is a cornerstone of our Caribbean culture. Examining it not just as a sport, but through the lenses of race, economics, and history, allows us to deepen our appreciation of its impact and creates new opportunities for future study.”

The launch not only celebrated the scholarly and cultural achievements of Dr. James and Dr. Harris but also underscored the enduring role of cricket as a unifying force in West Indian society.

Books are available on Amazon and locally from Koren Norton.
