Governor General Charges Senator Michael Freeland to Champion Youth, Culture and National Progress
Governor General His Excellency Sir Rodney Williams delivered an inspiring address at the swearing-in ceremony of Senator Michael Freeland on Friday, describing the appointment as a reaffirmation of Antigua and Barbuda’s dedication to leadership grounded in service, heritage, and youth empowerment.
Speaking at Government House before an audience that included Cabinet ministers, officials, and family members, Sir Rodney highlighted Freeland’s deep involvement in national development, particularly through sports and cultural initiatives.
“Mr. Freeland has provided dedicated service in various capacities, including youth and cultural development,” Sir Rodney noted. “His philosophy that sports tourism is a driver of national growth reflects his innovative approach.”
He praised Freeland’s longstanding vision of positioning Antigua and Barbuda as a regional and international sporting hub, noting that his efforts aim to use the power of sports to stimulate economic growth and foster unity. On the cultural front, the Governor General recognized Freeland’s significant contributions to preserving and celebrating the nation’s rich heritage. “His unwavering commitment to cultural initiatives has fostered a profound sense of pride and identity among our people,” he said.
Sir Rodney also paid tribute to Freeland’s late father, Sir Adolphus Freeland, who served as MP for St. George from 1976 to 1999. “Sir Adolphus’s decades of service were marked by an unwavering commitment to public service and national progress,” he said, adding that the younger Freeland is now continuing that legacy in the Upper House.
As Freeland fills the final vacant seat in the Senate, the Governor General expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to a vibrant and responsive legislative body. “His presence will add to the diverse perspectives and expertise already contributing to the nation’s governance,” Sir Rodney said. “We look forward with great anticipation to his contributions in this esteemed role.”
The Governor General closed by assuring Freeland of the nation’s full support as he embarks on his new chapter of public service.
