Government Cuts Fuel Costs by $2 Million Through Vehicle Audit

Housing Minister Maria Browne has announced a significant reduction in fuel expenditure for government vehicles, attributing the savings to an extensive audit and reassessment of vehicle allocations.

The minister revealed that over $2 million was saved in fuel costs in 2024 compared to the previous year, with further reductions projected for 2025

“The results of this audit are both encouraging and necessary,” Minister Browne said.

“Last year, we spent approximately $7 million on fuel for government vehicles. By identifying inefficiencies and reassessing vehicle use, we managed to bring that figure down by over $2 million.”

The audit, which covered approximately 984 vehicles, included an evaluation of fuel consumption patterns and the reassignment of vehicles where necessary.

“We worked closely with the Permanent Secretaries of various ministries to ensure that vehicles were allocated based on priority needs. This allowed us to redirect resources to essential areas like health and immigration,” Browne explained.

She also noted that the audit process uncovered several vehicles that were either underutilized or no longer necessary, enabling the government to retire or repurpose them.

“These changes not only save money but also improve efficiency across ministries. Every dollar saved is a dollar that can be reinvested into our people and our country,” she added.

Looking ahead, Minister Browne outlined plans to achieve an additional $1 million in savings for 2025.

“With better monitoring, stricter controls, and continued collaboration across ministries, we are confident that we can further reduce costs while maintaining essential services,” she said.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve financial management and enhance transparency in public spending. “This is what responsible governance looks like—listening, assessing, and implementing solutions that benefit the people of Antigua and Barbuda,” Browne concluded.
