Government to Implement 24-Hour Transfer System to Clear Child Maintenance Delays

A new 24-hour transfer policy is being introduced to fix backlogs in child maintenance payments after mothers complained that money paid through the courts was not reaching them promptly.

The concern was raised at Thursday night’s St John’s Rural South town hall, where a mother told officials that although fathers were making payments, funds were taking too long to move through the system before becoming available for collection. She said the delays were especially difficult for families with high needs, including her two autistic children who require significant care.

Attorney General Sir Steadroy Benjamin said an internal review was conducted after repeated complaints. He said Permanent Secretary Hildred Simpson met with senior court officials to address the bottleneck.

“The permanent secretary, Mrs Simpson, looked into the matter and she has spoken with the registrar, the deputy registrar, who is responsible for the family court,” Benjamin said. “They are now establishing a system where monies are sent immediately, no longer than 24 hours from the high court, down to the court where you can collect your funds.”

Benjamin said the breakdown had led some mothers to believe payments were not being made, when in fact the funds had been lodged but were delayed in processing.

  1. Might be the only sensible and meaning thing Cutie ever said now that he is coming to the end of his mediocre career in politics. Colossal waste of space

  2. Much appreciated, however gird your loins for a General Election. Gaston Browne hasn’t announced it publicly as yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar that he has briefed his Cabinet Members.

Fellow Antiguans and UPP supporters, it’s time to galvanise, regroup and prepare ourselves to vote 🗳 out this reactionary government. We must inform and inspire those who want betterment and change once and for all from this 50-year-old Bird-Browne dynasty.

Tactical voting will see the ABLP removed from office for good. I cannot wait!

OUR LAST CHANCE TO SAVE THE NEXT GENERATION …

  3. Well you’ve been asking for election, and bragged that you have the cards in order this time to pull it off, especially with the return of Lovell, so if he call the election, UPP shouldn’t have no problem.

  4. Here is a refined and professional continuation that includes your added points:

Another major concern is the frequent misinformation provided, where parents are told that payments were not made, only to later discover at the High Court that the money had in fact been paid. This creates unnecessary stress and confusion. Additionally, the process requires multiple phone calls and repeated follow ups, often during working hours, forcing parents to request time away from their jobs just to obtain accurate information or collect funds. These delays and inefficiencies make it extremely difficult to access the financial support needed to properly care for a child, which should never be this complicated or burdensome.

  5. Whike this is nice what about the non payers ? My children father owes me over 50,000 in child support and everytime its a run around story . He stop paying years now and no one can seem to help me …..the police cant even locate him and he had been seen walking in town etc . And if i go and interfere with him i am sure is jail time they’d give me
