Government to Acquire Cargo Plane; Maritime Link to Dominica Also Under Review

The government of Antigua and Barbuda is moving ahead with plans to acquire a dedicated cargo aircraft, with an official update expected from Prime Minister Gaston Browne at the next Cabinet sitting.

Although the matter was not discussed during Wednesday’s meeting, Director General in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, confirmed that the Prime Minister is leading negotiations related to the aircraft purchase.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen regional logistics and food security.

Merchant noted that the aircraft will be operated in collaboration with LIAT, with the airline expected to play a key role in cargo movement across the region.

The government is also reportedly examining the possibility of establishing maritime transport links between Antigua and Dominica, among other OECS countries.

The aim is to improve the movement of agricultural goods and reduce reliance on international supply chains.

Officials say the initiative is being driven in part by global disruptions in shipping and the need for more resilient regional trade systems.

The Prime Minister is expected to provide further details on both the cargo plane and maritime proposals in the coming weeks.

  1. Suggestion to the PM. Venezuela may have some cargo planes lying around that they are not using. You can lease some of them.

  2. Sounds real good but I hope the freight rates will be of one that will help drive down the high costs of goods in the region. Please consider the freight rates in making it more affordable to shippers….. That’s my biggest concern. Even if it means getting the region to subsidize some of the costs like fuel etc to help lower shipping costs. After all the Caribbean region especially caricom will be the greater beneficiaries of this move.
And while we are at it, we also desperately need a ferry to service the region especially Antigua, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Lucia, St Vincent etc. That’s my two piece

  4. If that craft is not flying in from MIAMI to provide an alternative to the Amerijets and DHLs of the world then I am not sure what we are talking about. Interregional trade is critical but is fledgling at this time with the need for greater dialogue and harmonization.

Ultimately, I am not mad at the move, but I think it needs some refocus.
