The government of Antigua and Barbuda has announced a renewed push to eliminate outdoor bathroom facilities across the country, describing the initiative as long overdue.

Minister for Social and Urban Transformation, Rawdon Turner, said the programme aims to ensure every affected household is fitted with a proper indoor bathroom.

He said homes identified through government assessments will receive direct interventions, with work carried out under existing social protection programmes.

“It was long past time for outdoor toilets in Antigua,” Mr Turner said, adding that community members and organisations are being encouraged to participate by contacting the Social Protection Board.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts under the Housing Assistance Programme Initiative (HAPI), which focuses on improving living conditions for vulnerable households.

The government recently announced the arrival of building materials valued at more than EC$1m, which will be distributed to households most in need. Officials say the materials are already being used to repair and rebuild homes damaged or lost, as well as those in severely dilapidated conditions.

Mr Turner said the expansion of the programme has highlighted the need for additional labour to meet construction demands.

  1. There are two things to note. Firstly, the government said many years ago that outdoor toilets were completely done away with. Ask the Minister of Health. Also the Minister of Social and Urban Transformation is Honourable Rawdon Turner, not Roland. Accuracy is extremely important.

  2. I would back the government on this 100% but the infrastructure have to be in place, APUA has to put in water pipe and electricity free around developing areas.

  3. Its the most comfortable way to take a dunk.💩 We the citizens and nationals of Antigua & Barbuda need to stage a protest at the Health & Housing Departments. Why would they want to ruin our comfort and fun? 😪

  4. It’s putting the cart before the horse, as is the norm with the Nation’s visionless policymakers known as politicians.

A…there is no infrastructure to accommodate this Nation wide initiative. The present push on the development of roads goes hand in glove with sewer systems. Are any sewer systems from leaching fields/ponds to recycling of grey water in any of the recent Housing Developments?
Having a septic tank/waste collection system on a property will allow for the continued seeping of raw sewage into the water table, as they overflow and most overflow in particular in St. John’s are dumped directly into the open guttters/drains, one reason why the foul odors are now constant in St. John’s.

Next up, where will all of the raw sewage collected be dumped, in a special landfill which could potentially have an adverse effect, on the water table due to its share volume in one or even several locations; and, this could eventually be problematic for springs and other natural water sources like ponds which play a major role in Agriculture, or what’s left of this industry.

Mental GRANDIOSITY (old neargah say, Big Boarseness) is one pillar of the INSANITY Culture of HUEmanity, in particular when it comes to the Means & Metgods employed to advance the Nation.

Yes, it can be done but where is the SKELETON to put the meat on to give it the 3D effect because 2D on paper and 1D from the mouth won’t cut in the the real true world.
