Government Scales Back One Million Trees Goal to 300,000 on Advice of Forestry Experts

The government has revised its nationwide tree-planting campaign from one million trees to 300,000 after the Forestry Division advised that the original target was unrealistic, Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant said during Friday’s post-Cabinet briefing.

Merchant said forestry officials met with the Cabinet this week and recommended that the initiative be “restructured” to a more attainable figure. He said the government accepted the experts’ guidance and formally adjusted the national goal to 300,000 trees .

According to Merchant, the Forestry Division, the Department of Agriculture and other connected agencies will now lead the revised tree-planting program. He said the adjustment reflects the technical assessment of the agencies responsible for executing the campaign and ensures the initiative remains achievable and properly supported .

The original one-million-tree announcement formed part of the government’s wider environmental agenda, but Merchant said Cabinet agreed that expert advice must guide the scale and pace of national reforestation efforts.

  1. It’s obvious that this planting of 1 million trees was a political ad, by the CABINET to make it seems like they really care about the environment with their pseudo rhetoric about global warming and climate change.
The trees which are indigenous to Antigua will naturally replenish themselves. The problem is over the past forty years, they paid little to no attention to the importance of trees.
The moronic thing which those charged with management of our resources, as they develop communities, they’ll have ALL of the trees in the area to he develop removed, rather than design and build with the topography. Mill Reef and Brown Bay developers did a good job by designing and building with the topography.

The other issue with these developments is, there are basically little to no GREEN SPACES – Community Parks with walking, hiking, biking trails to support the wholesome and holistic health of the Community. BTW – all public schools, sporting facilities MUST become green spaces with fruit trees, floral gardens – pollinators, fish ponds etc to assist with curbing pests like mosquitos etc….

If we notice, after a serious hurricane, some areas look like a forest fire swept through the hills; yet, these same areas will replenish themselves with little to no assistance.

The people should be tired of these political dinosaurs whose thoughts and actions are extinct and do not apply to two of the basic staples of life – FOOD & SHELTER, yes the third basic staple CLOTHING can also become a part of the long term planning regarding agriculture & aquaculture.

The MALE HEMP plant is one of the best trees to introduce into our FORESTRY long term planning. By itself, it covers all three of those basic staple FOOD, SHELTER, CLOTHING.
