Government Scales Back One Million Trees Goal to 300,000 on Advice of Forestry Experts
The government has revised its nationwide tree-planting campaign from one million trees to 300,000 after the Forestry Division advised that the original target was unrealistic, Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant said during Friday’s post-Cabinet briefing.
Merchant said forestry officials met with the Cabinet this week and recommended that the initiative be “restructured” to a more attainable figure. He said the government accepted the experts’ guidance and formally adjusted the national goal to 300,000 trees .
According to Merchant, the Forestry Division, the Department of Agriculture and other connected agencies will now lead the revised tree-planting program. He said the adjustment reflects the technical assessment of the agencies responsible for executing the campaign and ensures the initiative remains achievable and properly supported .
The original one-million-tree announcement formed part of the government’s wider environmental agenda, but Merchant said Cabinet agreed that expert advice must guide the scale and pace of national reforestation efforts.
