The government says its decision to grant a five percent interim salary increase to public servants will not put pressure on the national treasury, with the adjustment set to take effect at the end of March.
Officials said the increase had already been factored into the country’s financial planning, noting that it was announced during the 2025 Budget and should not come as a surprise.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the measure is intended to provide short-term relief to public sector workers while negotiations continue on a broader compensation package.
He added that treasury officials were given advance notice to ensure a smooth rollout and that employees should see the increase reflected in their end-of-month salaries.
Cabinet described the adjustment as temporary, stressing that it does not represent the final outcome of ongoing talks.
The government also pointed to its wider economic strategy, citing a focus on resilience, social protection and sustainable growth, while indicating it will continue monitoring global conditions and take further action if needed.

After election, alot of these workers will he getting pay extremely late, layoff or working 3 and 4 days a week. .
I only have one question for the Paymasters:
“Will this 5% interim increase in salary for public servants be applicable TO ALL PUBLIC SERVANTS, or will it ONLY benefit ELIGIBLE PUBLIC SECTOR EMPLOYEES?”
There are categories of public sector employees, making MEANINGFUL contributions to the business of government, WHO DO NOT BENEFIT AT ALL FROM THESE INCREASES OR INCENTIVES.
Every time these INCREASES OR BONUSES OR WHATEVER NAMES THESE INCENTIVES ARE LABELED AS, are announced, these HARDWORKING EMPLOYEES are told that they ARE NOT ELIGIBLE for the payment.
PM Browne, what is the INTENTION, when you are making these pronouncements? Who exactly do you have in mind to benefit from these incentives? (Legal luminaries know that INTENT becomes critical to interpreting Legislation.)
Surely, it can’t be just a certain section of the public sector workers this time, (everyone is feeling the pinch)! Because everyone knows that upwards of 75% of the eligible employees are unproductive and ineffective, but they are all getting these benefits even though they are producing VERY LITTLE TO NO WORK weekly or monthly. (Of course I don’t have official stats for this figure, it’s a very conservative estimate of a PERVASIVE culture).
Yet those who are productive, effective, and efficient get told that THEY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE!
PM BROWNE, you need to seriously looking into this! Because soon you’re going to have problems with these same INELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES that you love to call upon to fix the inefficiencies and unproductivity among the ELIGIBLE EMPLOYEES! Remember old people say that ‘Labour is sweetened by reward’. Also, it looks like you keep it in mind that you ‘ketch more flies with honey than with vinegar’, so make sure that message gets passed down to ALL who need to be told: these PS’s, PAS’s, AS’s, those in the Ministry’s Accounts Depts., and remind the Treasury too. Because many of them are doing just what suits themselves.
MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
FIX IT, BECAUSE WHEN RUBBER A BAND IS STRETCHED TOO FAR, THE SNAP BACK CAN BITE REALLY HARD!
DON’T LET THIS SNAP BACK BITE YOU THIS SNAP ELECTION!
