Government Prioritizes Road Repairs in St. Peter Ahead of By-Election
The government has ramped up roadworks in St. Peter, with significant projects underway in several areas as part of efforts to improve infrastructure in the constituency.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the use of new equipment, including a pug mill, is expected to accelerate the construction of roller-compacted concrete roads.
Speaking about the improvements, Mr. Browne stated, “We are committed to addressing the deplorable state of roads in communities like Gunthorpes and Lightfoot. These areas have suffered for too long, and we are making significant progress.”
He added that Public Works has been instrumental in executing the projects. “The department has scaled up operations with new equipment and additional manpower. The results are evident in the momentum we’ve seen in St. Peter, particularly in areas like Parham and Pears.”
While acknowledging the timing of the roadworks in relation to the upcoming by-election, the Prime Minister dismissed concerns about political motives. “The work began weeks ago, and it will continue beyond the by-election. This is about improving lives, not politics,” he said.
Plans to modernize infrastructure in privately developed areas were also announced. Mr. Browne suggested legislative changes to ensure developers allocate funds for road construction before projects are approved. “Developments like these ultimately reflect on the government, and we need to hold developers accountable,” he remarked.
The Prime Minister also responded to criticisms about delays in addressing road issues. “We understand the frustration of residents. That’s why we are working to ensure that significant sections of roads are tackled now, with the commitment to continue until the job is done.”
Residents in affected areas, including those in Gunthorpes and Lightfoot, are expected to see more road projects begin in the coming weeks, with assurances that all necessary resources are being mobilized to address the longstanding issues.

Take the road works when you can get them St. Peter.
UPP would say the roads should not be fixed because a by-election is pending. I say this is exactly why the roads should be fixed!
Here we go again, starve you into submission and the re-appear like the saviour, promising to fix all things that are bad. Why these hard headed Antiguans can’t see these politicians are taking them for ASSES. Something is definitely wrong with us. People in St. Peter, send a strong message of rejection to these want to be politicians which will also show the opponents on the other side that when they take you for granted as well you will reject them too.
After years of Asot telling the whole world that his government put his constituency on the back-burner, now it is by-election time, road works begins?
The electorates of St. Peter’s should feel insulted (if are you shame bag na burst).
Labourites, vote against Turner and vote for U.P.P. or don’t vote at all because a vote for Turner is a vote for gaston, the same man Asot said told him that St. Peter is not a priority.
That’s a rather backward way to think. Because your roads are being repaired after 20 years, you should not vote for the one who is repairing the roads? The one who is in opposition was there for ten years and did nothing just the same. So, what would be the benefit for voting for the opposition member now if he has less influence now, being the outsider?
I’m trying to follow the logic. When Rawdon Turner wins, he will still have to face a general election in a few years. Don’t you think that he would wish to retain the seat by continuing the journey of improving the constituency?
The opposition’s argument is so flawed that it’s mind boggling. They take the people for fools, I see.
By the way, where is @Brixtonian in all this?
@Dave Ray. If you wish to see Brixtonian you should attend ABLP executive meeting next friday to see Brixtonian in his red shirt and hear the world boss introduce him as the prodigal son returning.😅😅😅
The politicians in Antigua & Barbuda treat the people like pimps and dope pushers treat their high end call girls, street walking prostitutes and no teeth fentanyl/ice junkies. Over the years, the Jons were the Serians, Lebanese, Chinese, Expats, Europeans and Pirates/Mobsters of the north.
@D’Onally
That’s funny. I can’t see my friend, defecting to the ABLP when he’ was s so adamantly proselytizing for the UPP ,even in the face of the party’s titanic explosion or implosion. Let’s see on Friday. 🤣🤣🤣
