The government of Antigua and Barbuda is advancing plans to expand renewable energy in Barbuda, with a focus on making the Louis Hill housing project self-sufficient through solar power.
During Thursday’s Cabinet press briefing, Chief of Staff Lionel Hurst confirmed that the development will prioritize sustainability, reducing reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation.
“The idea is to make Barbuda a green island, including this new village comprised of 200 homes and other kinds of infrastructure, and to do it in such a way that it is sustainable over a long period of time,” Hurst said.
The housing project, which is being developed in phases, will integrate solar energy systems to power homes and essential infrastructure.
While diesel generators will be available, Hurst indicated that they will primarily serve as backup power sources rather than a primary energy supply.
“We intend for the Louis Hill project to be self-sustaining.
It won’t require diesel engines in order to generate electricity—maybe for standby purposes, but not on a regular basis,” he explained.
The renewable energy push aligns with broader government efforts to transition Barbuda toward a more sustainable energy model.
Officials have emphasized the importance of reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, particularly in light of climate change concerns and the vulnerability of small island states to external energy price fluctuations.
As part of the development, infrastructure such as roads and water management systems will also be designed to support the island’s long-term sustainability goals.
The Louis Hill housing initiative is expected to provide new residential opportunities while serving as a model for eco-friendly development in the Caribbean.
