Government of Antigua and Barbuda Issues First Payment on LIAT Employees Compassionate Payment Bond

St. John’s, Antigua – January 2, 2025 – The Government of Antigua and Barbuda today that the first installment of the LIAT Employees Compassionate Payment Bond has been transferred to BDO Eastern Caribbean for distribution to the eligible former LIAT employees. This allows former LIAT workers who were stationed in Antigua to begin receiving payments toward their severance.

The Compassionate Payment Bond, issued by the Government, is a 10-year bond valued at $16.72 million with an annual interest rate of 2%. This bond addresses Antigua and Barbuda’s 32% share of the severance owed to 405 former LIAT (1974) Ltd. employees, reflecting the nation’s ownership share in the regional airline.

This bond further demonstrates the Government’s commitment to the former LIAT employees and ensures a measure of relief for those affected by the airline’s closure.

Former LIAT 1974 Ltd. employees are advised to contact BDO Eastern Caribbean, the appointed escrow agent, to receive their payment. BDO is responsible for managing and distributing the bond payments to ensure a smooth and equitable process for all eligible recipients.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne late last year during his Budget Presentation in Parliament on 5th December, made the announcement of the Compassionate Payment Bond noting that his “government’s intervention in addressing the concerns of the former LIAT workers will provide much-needed relief and demonstrates government’s dedication to fairness and justice, representing meaningful action on behalf of the affected workers.”

  1. There’s no compassion towards the former LIAT workers. We should all remember that the Mad Man berated them publicly and informed them that he was not obligated to assist them. Another election is looming so this matter is pushed to the front as a bargaining chip. First, he tried with all his effort and strength to outlaw the union and insert himself as the lone bargaining agent in the matter and when that attempt failed, he went on a tirade. The guy is an affront to any kind of development unless he is going to be a beneficiary.

  2. Government’s commitment to liat workers..my big foot. Glad they finally getting their monies, but you ort to be shame Gaston Brown treating them the way you did and still doing like if they begging you . A fu dem money and they worked real hard for it.. well well..

  3. By pass the union. That is the way to do it. Look how much money they made when they collected the money from the Jolly Beach severance settlement. And the greedy lawyer got a handsome amount as well.

  4. ANTIGUA 32% shareholding equity of the SEVERANCE owed to 405 former LIAT (1974) LTD employees equates to 16.72 million dollars according to GB.Therefore the total 100% severance bill owe to the 405 workers are 53.5 million dollars do the maths not100 million as you claim in your recent article that the UPP if elected to power in the last election wouldn’t have been able to raise 100million dollars to pay the affected workers 100% of their severance (scaremongering tactics). The shortfall of 100% severance is 36.78 million dollars. We are due 100% of our severance similar to BARBADOS BASE and ST LUCIA WORKERS who were paid 100% of their severance by their respective caring GOVERNMENTS. Where is the ANTIGUA GOVERNMENT dedication to FAIRNESS AND JUSTICE representing meaningful action on behalf of the affected workers?UPP if elected to government raise the DEBT CEILING AND PAY us our 100% severance which is due to us by LAW.Also address the CLICO/BAICO debacle and pay us our MONEY people are suffering GASTON BROWN and his cronies have no vested interest in CLICO/BAICO.NOTE : EVERY HOUSEHOLD IN ANTIGUA ARE VICTIMS OF THE CLICO/BAICO DEBACLE.MOTTLEY paid the CLICO POLICYHOLDERS also the LIAT WORKERS in BARBADOS AND WON THE ELECTIONS LANDSLIDE VICTORY by telling the people “GIMME THE VOTE AND WATCH MUH”.HOME DRUMS BEAT FIRST I WILL PAY YOU IF ELECTED .

  5. I rather VOTE for someone without a DEGREE than a CON MAN and an EXPLOITER with a DEGREE.POOR MAN FROM GRAY’S FARM grew up in a house without windows should know better and stop robbing and exploiting poor people.PAY US OUR 100% SEVERANCE THAT IS DUE TO US BY LAW.And also PAY THE CLICO/BAICO POLICYHOLDERS THEIR MONEY WHO ARE SUFFERING AND DYING PREMATURELY, UNABLE TO MEET THEIR DAILY NEEDS.ONE CAN COME FROM A POOR BACK GROUND AND HAVE CLASS AND INTEGRITY.YOU HAVE NONE.
