Government Moves Forward with New Port in Barbuda for Trade and Tourism
The government is advancing plans to build a new port in Barbuda as part of efforts to expand trade and tourism infrastructure on the sister island.
During Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed that discussions have been ongoing for some time and that a potential site has now been identified.
Merchant said there is “a need for a new port in Barbuda,” explaining that “it is the intention of the government to construct a new port to improve trade and tourism, with the docking of yachts and so forth on Barbuda at an approved port.”
He said senior government officials recently traveled to the island “to assess the suitability of that area that was selected,” adding that a full report is expected soon.

Merchant noted that the new facility will support Barbuda’s growing tourism industry, which continues to attract increased investment. “As you know, Barbuda has been developing by leaps and bounds, and tourism is one of its major industries there,” he said.
Once the site assessment is completed, the Cabinet is expected to review design and construction options before moving ahead with the project.
The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader plan to strengthen Barbuda’s economic base through improved maritime infrastructure and regional trade links.
