In continuing efforts to cushion the effects of the Coronavirus on the fisheries sector, Cabinet has taken the decision to lower the cost of fuel by 20 percent to local fishermen.
The move forms part of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Barbuda Affairs overall plans for Food Security and Availability in Antigua and Barbuda. The lowering of the cost of fuel, which took effect on Monday 30 March 2020, will last for 90 days.
Fisheries Minister, Hon. Samantha Marshall, welcomed the recent cabinet decision as she underscored the importance of the role of fisher folksin food nutrition and security, especially during this time. This assistance to fishermen comes on the heels of a major initiative, which the ministry has launched among large scale farmers to help the ministry drive increased crop production as it looks to further strengthen the local food chain in this COVID-19 era.
Meanwhile, all fishermen registered with the Fisheries Division should ensure they are in possession of their fisheries issued identification cards when operating during the curfew which was implemented by the government. Those failing to do so will face the brunt of the law.

So what if a man without a license goes fishing to feed his family during the 7-12 liberty time?
Go get your licence. Call the Police and report to them that you will need to go to the fisheries dept. Call fisheries first to make sure that you can visit. Let the police know the registration number of the vehicle that you will be driving to go to fisheries. Get their permission first. Follow the law. I don’t think under the circumstances they will be unreasonable. Fishing without a fishing licence is against the law. Do the right thing. Simple.
Good to know the price was lowered for a hand full of fisher folk. Why not lowered it for the masses in the country.I bought gas yesterday for $1.28 in the State where I am living. And I can say it is heading lower.multiply US$1.28 by EC$2.70 =$3.46 EC. Stop digging out the people eyes with price gouging of gas pricing by the Government.Any business person in Antigua and Barbuda could not have such a huge mark up on their products. So why is the Government be allowed to get away with it.
Stop the gas price gouging, everyone needs a break at the pump at this difficult time of crisis.
