Antigua and Barbuda: Aviation Minister Highlights Air Traffic Controller Training After Air Canada Emergency

Antigua and Barbuda’s Aviation Minister, Charles Max Fernandez, has commended the nation’s air traffic controllers, noting that their recent training played a crucial role in handling an Air Canada emergency last week.

Speaking on state television, Fernandez revealed that Deputy Chief Traffic Controller Mr. Silcott had conducted a safety theory exam on Wednesday—just a day before the real-life emergency unfolded on Thursday.

“It was almost as though they had rehearsed for it,” Fernandez said, emphasizing how the preparedness exercise contributed significantly to the response.

He underscored the government’s commitment, alongside the Airport Authority, to ensuring Antigua and Barbuda’s air traffic controllers receive top-tier training, making them among the best in the Caribbean region and beyond.
