CABINET NOTES-  Following a report by the Minister for Agriculture on the state of Antigua and Barbuda’s agriculture sector, the Cabinet commended the Hon. Minister Anthony Smith for his outstanding efforts in revitalizing the industry.

More farmers are now benefiting from government support, leading to increased food production across the country.

The government has procured heavy-duty equipment to assist farmers, some of which are already in operation.

Over 15,000 slips of the renowned Black Antigua pineapple have been planted at Cades Bay, and a Plant Tissue Laboratory is currently under construction to support fruit production.

Additionally, the Ministry has begun constructing dams and ponds across the island to ensure farmers have adequate access to fresh water.

The Minister also reported that all equipment for a new abattoir has been purchased, along with a new steel-frame building, which is expected to arrive in the country within the next ninety days.

Cabinet members were also briefed on plans for this year’s PiAngo Festival, which will highlight agro-production of key products, including pineapple, mangoes, and other fruits and vegetables.

Originally postponed due to a pending storm, the festival is now scheduled to take place on August 24 at the Cades Bay Agricultural Station.

In other developments, the Cabinet announced that 150 parcels of land in the Olivers area will soon be available for housing development.

Through the National Housing Company, surveying and infrastructure work will commence in the coming weeks to make the lands ready for purchase.

  1. Bla bla bla bla bla! And yet still departments within your ministry do not have vehicles to do the work. For example Extension Division have 1 (one) vehicle shared between 5 district and 5 district officers. So one day a week per officer mmmmmmm. A better the workers them go do farming, so they can get some form of benefit.

  2. 15,000 Black Antigua pineapple slips? That’s impressive! Can’t wait to see the harvest and the PiAngo Festival back in action.

  3. Really encouraging to see water security being taken seriously with dams and ponds, farmers will definitely appreciate that.

  4. Blessed Love I was sharing an earnest comment but was surprised at the “a better workers go do farming”, post..My sincere comment would include RETURN FARMS BACK TO THE PEOPLE WHO the same Extension Division created a demise in the first place against to TAKE clearly visible FARMS in ACTION (being used)???After the MInister of Agricultural has claimed improvement in this sector and a blogger sounds like a extension officer with the same gripe….?? Complain internally mostly against the higher authority..Minister and PM and directors??? and THEN the FARMER who doesn’t keep a clean land or any excuse versus them not DOING NOTHING>>> I feel this blogger should seek an audience with Minister and support your claim..ONE vehicle no equipment since hurricane etc, not blog after the MInister is high lighted in an article claiming improvement??Minister Smith agriculture and ALL Governance is operated in INTERGRITY>>>
ps.The indirect statement about ” better the worker work their own farm?? what do extension division officers do? as a professional? Are there CO-OP Farms??in the MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE?
    Blessed LOve.

  5. a resend ?? I share a comment that was removed? pending? I was commenting on the Minister of Agricultural sharing recent improvement in the sector ..and a blogger”,A better worker go do farming” who mentioned NOT all is well with EXtension Division in particular ONE vehicle available to use..I shared “RETURNING the farms BACK” who the same extension division took from farmers , clearly FARMS IN USE..THe complaints at large blame ministers ,PS and directors performance and LACK of equipment..SAD to blame the farmer whois not in politics and SINCERLY use the farms for GOOD..I trust the original blog will appear but my sentiments are real..The extension division could operate a CO-OP plots and share some needed foods to the poor and needy?? so the comment ” a better the workers them go do farming” can be put in action…trust the news feed can find original blog
    BlessedLove

  6. We will get there but we all have to chip in. Make sure to support your local farmers before running to the price gouging grocery stores.

The quality of the goods are MUCH better and the prices are really reasonable. The local farmers are who saved me during COVID so I have much respect for them.

Let their hard work pay off.
