Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez announced on Monday that the government is in talks with Frontier Airlines to operate the Antigua-San Juan route.

Last year, the government partnered with Frontier to relaunch the Orlando-Antigua route, which was the only nonstop service from Orlando to Antigua, enhancing Antigua’s presence in the Florida market.

Despite its abrupt end, negotiations have resumed as Frontier expands its services.

“They will operate a bigger aircraft, and Frontier has direct routes from various US locations, unlike Silver Airways,” said Fernandez. Silver Airways operated the San Juan-Antigua route until May, but unfavorable conditions led to its discontinuation.

Fernandez noted that other islands paid substantial amounts to maintain flights, which proved uneconomical, leading to their cessation. “We engaged with them initially because the route was important. However, when negotiations reached diminishing returns, we decided to end it,” he explained.

  1. Was this the same airline that promised several jobs to our locals and a photo of our frigid birds 🐦 on their planes?

  2. Silver came…Silver left. The reality is that the Antigua-San Juan route is not the same as it was in the 90s. Gone are the days when commerce was what is was like back then when people used to go to Puerto Rico to shop. Gone are the days when we had limited direct flights to different states in the USA. With that said I wish to see how this flight can be sustained if it comes off.
Again Silver came with their ATRs and the load factor was very very low. I for instance seized the opportunity and went to Puerto Rico over the easter and if the plane was half full on both legs they had plenty.

  3. I believe the times the San Juan flights leave Antigua and return is essential for its success. They need to leave early in the mornings, like American eagle did in the 90’s early 2000’s, so that it offers the option for onward connections that may end up cheaper than going through MIA, or allows you to arrive at your final destination earlier than going through MIA or JFK. In addition, it allows one to go to San Juan to pick up things and return the same day.
