Government House Perimeter Wall Vandalized During Carnival – Swift Action Restores Its Dignity

The Office of the Governor-General expresses its deep shock and disappointment at the irresponsible actions of individuals who defaced the historic perimeter wall of Government House during the recent Carnival parades. This act of vandalism disrespected not only the nation’s premier heritage site, but also the people of Antigua and Barbuda who value its cultural and historical significance.

In the face of this regrettable incident, the response of our community has been both heartening and exemplary. We extend sincere thanks to the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force for their swift assistance, and to the many donors and volunteers who generously provided paint, supplies, and time to restore the wall to its dignified appearance.

His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Rodney Williams, felt so strongly about the matter that he made a significant personal donation to procure paint and tools, ensuring that the work could be completed without delay. This personal gesture underscores his deep commitment to safeguarding the dignity of Government House and to preserving Antigua and Barbuda’s national heritage.

Government House, which continues to undergo restoration as part of a major heritage project, stands as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Antiguan and Barbudan people. The quick and generous response to this unfortunate episode is further proof of our shared commitment to protecting our history for generations to come.

We appeal to all citizens and visitors to respect and protect our historic landmarks. Anyone caught defacing the wall will face the charges resulting from their actions. Acts of vandalism diminish our collective identity, while acts of care and service strengthen it.

  1. When the rum and other substances are in, you can expect anything. I don’t know why people get a kick out of defacing buildings and fences particularly at Carnival time. It is the kind of immaturity that is so often seen. Some people seem to feel the need to behave in a trivial way. Maybe it’s just a left over of the old instinct to mark their territory wherever they go – “an idiot was here.” Usually these are young males, intoxicated and high on something.

  2. There is a STRONG need for a camera system to be set up around the heritage sites, in the city, some exterior environs and especially places like the ports, airport, significant entry areas (jolly Harbour, seasons, Parham etc) the level of lawlessness is abhorrent!!!!

  3. I agree the wall has historical and cultural value. But why are we still not outraged about all the missing persons in Antigua as we are about this wall?

Why are we not outraged about the gun violence and robberies as we are about how government house wall looks?

I think human life is most important. Let’s get more outraged about crime in Antigua please.

  4. Chups.. all the better it’s cultural it got some cultural decor.

I guess they should’ve gotten security like Sagicor had to.

  5. @ANR Editors – #Mental_Slavery cannot hold nor control a Jumbee/spirit like mine. Please don’t fear some words encapsulated, in the truth of the Nation’ reality.
Ain’t no wonder many are walking around zombified, brain dead.

    ODB…

  6. I’ve been grumbling about carnival paint spots on that wall for 2 years now. Ironically, i saw a picture of the PM and his wife observing the festivities somewhere close to that spot. Well…they want fun
