The New Democratic Party has won the 2025 general election, returning to government after 25 years. Party leader Dr. Godwin Friday is set to become the island’s seventh prime minister since independence, defeating longtime incumbent Ralph Gonsalves.

The NDP secured nine seats to end Gonsalves’ extended run in office. Friday will take charge in the coming days as the country looks to his plans for tackling economic and social challenges.

  1. If an intellectual like Ralph gonsalves can lose election, how much to a miscreant like Gaston that is anti black and anti Antiguan and barbudans.

  2. Well Ralph didn’t know when to call it quit. 25 years is a lifetime for some people. Just like the Labour Party here under Papa Bird and then Lester Bird. People got tiered to the Birds running the country. But after the misery they suffered under the UPP they quickly put them back in opposition. And now Gaston Browne will lead us for another 25 years. 2014 through 2039. UPP sit down and relax and don’t get excited Antigua isn’t Sint Vincent.

  3. Eldread- Ralph Gonsalves defeat is completely different than that of Antigua political environment. Ralph should have retired from the leadership of his party, his age and the human lifespan is enough reason to vote him out. Then you have the younger and more educated voters, who would be wary of promises. If you have been in office for five consecutive terms, you should have accomplished what you set out to do and take a bow.
As a people we are afraid of change, however in this case change is enviable , people grow weary.
There is no parallels that can be drawn between the Antigua opposition- UPP and the NDP that will be the new St. Vincent Administration. The level of Educated and qualified candidates that NDP put forward in this election was outstanding. The UPP Opposition party in Antigua since their convention has not shown a united front. They have found it so difficult to recruit high caliber candidates. While the ABLP continues to do the opposite to include drawing from the younger membership of the UPP. It has become normal to wake up any day and hear a top UPP official join ranks with the ruling ABLP party. Many of whom have made such strong statements about corruption and abuse in public office are now highly ranked members of the ABLP.
The political leader of the UPP party is no match for the Hon. Gaston Browne as an educated politician or leader. Politics is public speaking and the leader of the UPP is incompetent in this regard. Just cannot see him representing Antigua on the world stage. In fact within the UPP ranks, D.Gisel Issac is the only person that can stand toe to toe with Gaston Browne. She should have gone for the political leadership of that party long time ago. The APLP has done a great Job attacking and making her likability less than it should be. Likewise the UPP executive members, including MP’s don’t seem to stand for anything.
I do believe that we need political reforms. That includes term limits and set election dates. Not a single person/ politician should call an election long before his elected term in office is due. The most we should allow in my opinion is 3 terms. We need to ensure that the democratic system works. Take example Sir. Robin, sitting in Parliament like some kind of statue. At one point during the Throne Speech he started removing stuff from his desk. It was evident on national TV that Sir. Maulwin Joseph was taking away the stuff from him.
Then we have the Vechiclegate scandal and allegations of corruption of the civil servants and government officials by the Prime Minister. Yet the outcry by the public seems partisan, which should not be. The UPP in the face of such a big corruption scandal still has not gotten any traction.
Seems like Gaston can say like Donald Trump, that he can Shoot someone on market street and nothing will happen.

  4. GOOD RIDDANCE to a BIG BELLY 6 STAR GENERAL.The people have spoken you should have paid the CLICO/BAICO POLICYHOLDERS their money also LIAT (1974) LTD workers their SEVERANCE.You need to go to CUBA and dwindle away you are nothing else but a COMMUNIST SEWERAGE RAT.MADURO time in power is limited, who you endorsed as the legitimate president of VENEZUELA.

  5. @Eldread a.k.a Eldead
Your obviously personal hate for Antigua’s young dynamic, political leadership clearly colors the very froth that that escapes that smelly mouth of yours! There is absolutely NO COMPARISON between the defeated Gonsalves and our illustrious PM. BROWNE! Gonsalves has outlived his usefulness and has marred what to many might have been considered a stellar contribution to Caribbean politics. His contribution to the demise of LIAT 1974 and the subsequent return of LIAT 20/20 sounded the death knell for the old chap. Gonsalves now needs to retire with whatever scraps of dignity he has left and cease being the embarrassing millstone around the necks of young, vibrant, visionary political statemen and women that drive today’s Caribbean development and progress. Don’t you DARE make a comparison where is none, ELDEAD!

  6. Well done st.vincent and the grenadines you all know what’s good for your country.Hope Antiguans learned from this election.

  7. Ralph Gonsalves ruled for nearly 25 years. Skerrit has been in office for two decades. Gaston Browne is entering his second decade in Antigua. Voters across the region are asking the same question: how long is too long?

  8. A change is going to come in Antigua.CANNOT WAIT TO SEE THE BACKS OF THOSE IN THIS ADMINISTRATION GET VOTED OUT ON THEIR BEHINDS. GOOD RIDDANCE.

  9. All the wannabe dictators will soon be removed from office. They are no good for the upliftment of any nation.

When one man have all the say like he’s some God, it’s always to the detriment of a free people.

The same thing must similarly happen here in Antigua in the not too near future.
The people of the Caribbean must vote for the implementation of term limits in government, must.

When these old heads get their toes sink in the backs of the people, they don’t like taking them out.

    Term limits!!!

  10. Congrats on the new helm 🇻🇨—25 years of history, now it’s time for fresh scripts. May the change be bold, the steps be steady, and if the ship starts leaking, remember it’s the crew, not the tide. 🤝✨

  11. Well from what I see online, most people voted for a change because of the high cost of living etc, and as we know they will soon realize that changing a party will not bring down the cost of living. Americans listen to Trump who promised the stars and the heavens and they are still bawling or bawling even harder!

I hope they will give the party a chance to make a difference or else you watch, in 5 years when they have elections again, they will put him right back there (if he runs again).

  12. CARICOM have to start sucking up to SENORA MACHADO.MADURO the BUS DRIVER time is running out.Ms Machado is fully aware who is her FRIEND or ENEMY.No more free oil(petro caribe).
