Global Ports CEO Reaffirms Support for Local Entrepreneurs in Antigua
The head of Global Ports has restated the company’s commitment to funding local business development in Antigua and Barbuda.
During a recent groundbreaking ceremony, the company’s CEO confirmed that financial contributions to the Entrepreneurial Development Fund (EDF) will continue, supporting small businesses and startups.
“He has agreed that he will be making a few hundred thousand dollars available every year to the fund,” Prime Minister Gaston Browne said. “This was a prior agreement, and I noticed no one was saying anything about it, but he has now recommitted to that pledge.”
Browne added that the partnership will also focus on expanding investment opportunities beyond the initial funding. “He has also committed to working with us to attract additional facilities,” he said.
The Entrepreneurial Development Fund was established to provide financial support to local businesses, helping them grow and contribute to the country’s economy.
Discussions surrounding Global Ports’ role in Antigua’s economic development have been ongoing, with the government ensuring that commitments made under previous agreements are upheld.
While it remains unclear whether this financial contribution was formally included in the contract, Browne said the CEO’s renewed commitment reinforces the company’s role in supporting local enterprises.
The government is also seeking to enhance the tourism industry by developing infrastructure that caters to high-end visitors. Browne said plans include improving facilities for mega yachts and increasing the number of luxury retail spaces.
“These visitors are looking for premium brands,” he said. “We need to create the environment that encourages them to spend more when they visit Antigua and Barbuda.”
The government and Global Ports are expected to continue working together to boost investment and provide more opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
