Glanville’s and SNRA to Pilot Extended School Hours Program

3

Glanville’s Secondary and Sir Novelle Richards Academy (SNRA) will soon pilot a program to extend school hours two days a week, focusing on fostering creativity and extracurricular engagement.

Director of Education Clare Browne explained that the schools were chosen to test the program in both small (Glanvilles, 160 students) and large (SNRA, over 500 students) settings, and due to their existing after-school activities, such as SNRA’s driver’s education program in partnership with the Transport Board.

The initiative emphasizes creative activities like music and guitar over academics. Discussions with Director of Culture Khan Cordice are shaping the program’s offerings. The extended day will run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM after a half-hour break following the current 1:30 PM dismissal.

While no launch date is set, Browne stressed the importance of gradual implementation with stakeholder input to ensure its success.
