Gender Affairs Director Says Men Must Be More Involved in Curbing Gender Violence
Antigua and Barbuda’s Gender Affairs Director Jamie Saunders is urging men to take a more active role in efforts to reduce gender-based violence, arguing that progress depends on treating men as part of the solution.
Saunders said current public debate often pits men and women against each other, which he described as unhelpful. He said cultural expectations that discourage men from showing vulnerability fuel anger and unhealthy responses to conflict, with consequences that play out in homes, workplaces and communities.
He noted that while women remain the primary victims of gender-based violence, men also face harm—both as victims and through social pressures that limit emotional expression. Encouraging men to develop stronger communication and conflict-management skills, he said, is critical to safer relationships.
Saunders also pointed to the economic cost of domestic abuse, citing international studies showing that countries lose millions annually due to medical bills, lost productivity and court proceedings.
He said more men are beginning to support prevention efforts and are showing greater willingness to engage. Building that momentum, he added, is essential to reducing violence and creating more stable and inclusive communities.
