MP Lewis: Gaston Browne Refuses to Protect Our People From Gas Hikes In Spite of Record Tax Revenue

It is an act of gross wickedness to suddenly impose higher gas prices on our people, at a time of record tax revenue collection.

Gaston Browne’s onslaught of tax increases and new taxes, coupled with his government’s boasts of record revenue collection, and savings, should have made protecting our people from today’s gas hikes the obvious decision.

The Prime Minister and his proxies have thus far boasted about:

– Weekly improvements in the tax collection rate

– Reductions in wasteful spending

– Capturing new revenue by cutting back on the $175 million per year in discretionary waivers

– A 21% year-on-year increase in Customs Duty collection, for January and February 2024

In addition, the Gaston-led Government imposed the ABST, to extract $50 million more from the people’s pockets every year, contrary to the PM’s election promise.

As if that wasn’t enough, we were blindsided by 3 new taxes in Budget 2024.

We can all clearly see that the Prime Minister is more than able to take meaningful action to “ease the squeeze”.

Gaston Browne simply refuses to use our tax dollars to protect families and small businesses from economic hardship.

I therefore urge our people not to be fooled by his excuses and deflections.

The consequences of exposing our people to this sudden gas hike would have been manifestly clear to any good leader: Our food prices and overall cost of living will be driven even higher, as the increased gas prices are passed on to consumers. And this will cause consumer spending to fall even further, as our families are forced to put less food on the dinner table.

Our people simply cannot absorb this gas price increase, in the current high cost of living and high unemployment climate, which was needlessly created by Gaston Browne’s broken promises and economic incompetence.

Regrettably, we have a Prime Minister who is preoccupied with creative enrichment, while our people suffer.

Richard S. Lewis MP

  1. Is Richard Lewis the Leader of UPP ….Where is Pringle ? This Guy has dumped Pringle to the curb before the convention. Richard Lewis is a ONE term Member of Parliament. His seat will come back to ABLP for sure. Anderson Carty on the BIG ISSUES on Sunday echoed the same thing .

Richard Lewis trying very hard to be relevant. UPP in SHAMBLES.

    • Indeed

I like how Gaston’s excuses are rubbished in advance.

Gaston has the money to protect our pockets. And it’s our tax money, yet it doesn’t even benefit us.

This PM just doesn’t give a fart about the suffering of our people.

With Gaston the needs of the creative enrichment machine in this country clearly rank higher than relief measures or economic stimulus. It is now beyond any doubt.

  2. So rather than respond to the message, Rupert Mann chooses to attack the messenger. Was the message incorrect? Did MP Lewis mislead us like Gaston did and continues to do? No. But you minions will never face up to the truth. Antigua can go to hell for you all as long as you can continue to kiss Gaston’s rear.

    • @ Hab so nah lub ‘Antigua’ so!

You still cannot respond to valid criticisms about how this country is so badly run by Gaston Browne and the ABLP administration.

Are you ok in your cranium?

Ha ha ha! See what I did there at Hab so nah lub ‘Antigua’ so … probably not 😅😅😅

      • @ BRIXTONIAN

Stop singing for your supper. All of a sudden ..you are brown nosing UPP. Could not get your way with ABLP so you jumped ship. You kissed too many ? ?

        • @ INTACT, free speech is open to everyone and anyone – just like you’ve just RIGHTLY opined.

Try not to get too upset by my WORDS, but instead worry yourself about the economical damage Gaston Browne is causing to Antigua & Barbuda at present!

Bwoi, some people are so oblivious to the current troubles and suffering plaguing us here today.

Never forget @ INTACT, fyah de a mus mus tail, people think ah cool breeze. Tarl!

  3. @ Rupert mann
    You sound like a parrot.
If you have some criticism of MP Lewis come up with an original thought.

It’s time for the ABLP crumb snatchers to go from the worn out meaningless and pointless word “relevant”.
Expand your vocabulary to be taken seriously.

  4. We are cursed with an abject DUNCE in control of this country’s finances. In spite of the billions he has squeezed out of poor people in taxes, he continues to hike cost to increase revenues to a broke government. The man is a scourge. The worst, most incompetent clown to be called prime minister. His greed knows no limit.
Can we survive another 4 years of this clown? Will anything be left for the generations to come when this is over?
