Gail Christian Appointed Consul General in Toronto

Former Senate Leader Gail Christian has been appointed as Antigua and Barbuda’s new Consul General in Toronto, Canada, as part of the government’s latest diplomatic postings.

The announcement was made by Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant during the post-Cabinet briefing, who said the appointment reflects the Gaston Browne administration’s commitment to advancing women in leadership roles.

Merchant said the “former leader of government business in the Senate, Senator Gail Christian, has been appointed and will take up duties in the coming week as Consul General of Antigua and Barbuda in Toronto, Canada.”

Christian, who previously served as Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to Mexico, has held several senior diplomatic and legal roles. She will now oversee consular operations in Toronto, which serves one of the country’s largest diaspora communities.

Joining her will be Zeina Heshmi, a Foreign Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will serve as First Secretary.

According to Merchant, the appointments demonstrate the administration’s record of promoting women to key positions within government. He noted that “the Gaston Browne administration has a track record of elevating women to some of the highest positions of government,” adding that both Christian and Heshmi will “take the flag of Antigua and Barbuda and contribute their talents to the service of the people and government.”
