Reflecting on her journey in the tourism and hospitality  industry, her passion for guest service and a constant desire to achieve excellence is always at the  forefront of Nerissa Martin’s endeavors.

Now, 15 years later, with a world of experience under her belt,  the proud Sandals Grande Antigua team member still has her eyes set on the prize.

Nerissa joined the Sandals family in 2007 as a restaurant server, and has shown dedication and  commitment to meeting and exceeding customer service expectations.

“Growing up, it was always a part  of me to care for people.

Joining the Sandals family not only allowed me to do that but it has proven to be  a satisfying and rewarding experience,” she shared.

Excelling as a server, Nerissa challenged herself to be more involved in guest services, zealously jumping at the opportunities for training and development offered by the company, one of which was with the Club Sandals department.

Shortly after her training she was transferred to the department where she  worked as a Club Sandals concierge from 2013 until her promotion to Club Sandals supervisor in 2017.

“During my time as supervisor, I gained so much experience, knowledge, and skills which combined well  with my previous experience in food & beverage.

I had my eyes set on any cross-training opportunity for  restaurant management exposure. So, when this opportunity presented itself I jumped at it,” she shared.

As destiny would have it, Nerissa was successful at securing a promotion to restaurant manager and is  assigned to the OK Corral restaurant which is a Tex-Mex dining experience for guests.

Since her promotion Nerissa has been a trail-blazer, exemplifying her natural skills in leadership, human  resources and customer service by facilitating team member trainings, implementing recognition programmes, and always encouraging growth and development among the team members she leads.

With  her outstanding track record thus far, Nerissa has her eyes set on continuing her self- improvement and  development journey as she aspires to one day become a food and beverage director within the company.

With the support of the resort’s learning and development team she feels confident that she can continue  to attain what she dubs her “Big Dreams.”

Where I am right now is a testament to the company’s  promise to both train and provide opportunities to every member of the team, and if you are willing to go  the extra mile, to harness and advance your skills, the sky is the limit.”

  1. Well done Nerissa, now use all that company knowledge that you’ve accumulated over time, and use it to your capable advantage in the future to start-up on your own.

I worked myself up the company/corporate ladder and started my own business a decade or so later.

You’ll know in your heart and mind the right time to do so.

    Again congratulations 🎊

    • Brix, I don’t want to pick an argument with you for argument’s sake, but this is something I also disagree with the PM on. Not everyone is cut out to be an entrepreneur. My professor used to say, entrepreneurs are born. You can be an investor in a business, but not an entrepreneur. Or you can be self-employed and still not an entrepreneur. Many lawyers, doctors, electricians, plumbers etc. are self employed, but none of them are entrepreneurs. While an entrepreneur can have a law office and hire many lawyers, have a medical centre and hire many doctors, have an electrical store and hire many electricians and so on. Many businesses that are built by self-employed professionals will only last as long as the owner is. He/She may be lucky if his children walk in his footsteps. I have seen many doctors’ offices and law offices closed because of that. No succession planning. On the other hand, you may be the best doctor in your field and work for a hospital or the best lawyer or electrician and work for a company that pays well and provides you with the best opportunity to display your talent. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with someone being content with the job they are in. Not everyone is born to be an entrepreneur or Self-Employed.

  2. Congrats, Its good to see Sandals (and A&B) continuing to foster growth. Recall the enthusiasm of the staff bolstered by the fact that this was a (work)family that extended beyond A&B. Those who got the opportunity to visit the other properties, got more exposure. Nerissa Martin, keep up the good work, and rubbishing the idea that Antiguans & Barbudan’s cannot succeed where they are born

  3. There are some that still want to claim that all these hotels are bringing are jobs for lower paid workers. Gardeners, Housekeepers. But time and time again we see that this is not true. The hotel industry brings opportunity for some good paying jobs. And depending on one’s ambition you can climb high up in this industry. I mean it all depends on the person. You have people that left State College many years ago, got into a job in a bank as teller, and had no ambition whatsoever and remained at the lower end of the corporate ladder for their entire work life. Sandals have been a perfect example of empowering and encouraging those that have it within them. The other day we saw a young lady becoming a “Butler”. I want to congratulate this young lady for having made it so far and still looking at making it much further in this industry. And I want to thank the Sandals Group for having establish their brand of hotels in Antigua and I hope and wish them many more successful years in this industry in Antigua and Barbuda. I was there for the opening and party all night with Butch and Denise Plummer, Cents, Five Cents Ten Cents Dollar. The Dollar Wine.

  4. Congratulations Nerissa, keep your feet on the ground and reach for the stars. The Sky is your limits. Good Luck now and into your future.

  5. Gerald Watt & Sidelines are a dying breed of neocolonial mentalities that just need to stfu! Know everything, need to be relevant and continue to mis-educate the locals. STFU with your class mentality, edge-up to corrupt persons for the good of your pocket!
