Senator Michael Freeland has honoured the life and legacy of Genevieve “Teacher Gen” Smith, describing her as a community icon whose influence will be felt for generations across Potters Village and the wider St. George constituency.
In a statement shared this week, Freeland said he was deeply saddened by her passing, noting that Teacher Gen spent more than four decades dedicated to educating and uplifting children. He highlighted her extraordinary commitment to young people, especially those with special needs, and her work as a foster parent.
Freeland said Teacher Gen “dedicated her life to nurturing young minds and uplifting our community,” adding that she not only taught children but “believed in their potential and worked tirelessly to unlock it.”
Her contributions extended far beyond the classroom. She fostered 63 children over her lifetime and supported countless others, becoming a steady presence in the lives of families across Potters. Freeland described her as “a true matriarch” whose compassion and service defined her role in the village.
He also pointed to the scholarship created in her honour at Potters Primary School, which recognizes outstanding students each year. According to Freeland, the initiative ensures her impact continues to shape the growth and aspirations of young people.
The senator extended condolences to her family, the Potters Zion Moravian Church, and all those mourning her loss. He pledged to continue supporting community schools and youth development efforts, saying he intends to champion the values and causes that mattered most to her.
Freeland said Teacher Gen’s “light will continue to shine through the lives she touched,” remembering her as a woman whose dedication, wisdom and love helped define the character of Potters Village.
