Several other persons were said to have been affected, as well, in what appears to be a case of poisoning by carbon monoxide.

Residents of the community claim that at least two persons were pumping water from a cistern when they decided to lower the equipment into the underground space.

Reportedly, the fumes from the pump eventually overcame the workers and a third person who rushed to their assistance.

Unconfirmed reports say that, in their weakened state, one young man was unable to get out of the enclosed space in time to be saved, and a second person has since been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit.

Neighbours claim that some of the first responders – the Emergency Medical Service (EMS), Fire Department, and Police – were affected, as well, during the rescue, and they are praising the efforts of the professionals who revived and attended the survivors.

REAL News will report further on this story as details are confirmed.

  1. This why there needs to be Occupational Safety and Health Association with a bigger presence in Antigua. This business a registered and pay tax; therefore it should be mandatory that this type of training be received annually.

    • @Silvia Tuthill: I endorse your sentiments of ” training ” should be enforced. At the same time each household in Antigua & Barbuda should have within, at least one person trained in CPR. The more persons trained the better. Red Cross is one such institution that offer such courses.

  2. So sad , lack of knowledge. A few years ago a mother and sons died because they were using a generator inside their house. I learnt that in school very early and never forget. Vechicles , anything using fuel gives off C0 – carbon monoxide, which is unstable. To become stable when it has to take up another Oxygen to become CO2. The 2 is normally written below the O and not in a straight line. So in that close up space or in a very polluted environment the oxygen is taken from the human or animal blood. That is why they are trying to reduce immersion and the talk about cleaner foot print.
When working in a enclosed area an electrical equipment is much better. Guess this will serve those of us that are alive as a reminder.

  3. My sympathies to my niece and nephew on the passing of their brother may he rest in peace this catch me off guard i started crying my sympathies to his mother

  4. Condolences to his family.

I doubt implementing OSHA standards will unlearn decades of bad practices on a worksite. I was born in 1970 and I know a foreman that has been in construction two decades before I entered the industry. I will go through the duties of the day, query if he understands what should and should not be done and when I leave the site and return it is utter chaos. As great as he is at his trade, he requires constant supervision and unfortunately there are many like him training the new generation of workers. They know how to do A to get to E but the reasoning of B, C, and D is lost to them, and the mentality is “Ah so me larn how fu do um so ah so me go du um annah so me go sho he fu du um too”

  5. 1. To what extent was either the hazards of the job and/ or the procedures for getting it done was understood by the men involved?…
    2. Did any of the men have experience with the type of job?
