Two women from Belmont and Potters are under police investigation for allegedly defrauding clients in “Box Hands” or “Sou-Sou” schemes, reportedly stealing thousands of dollars. Complaints arose from clients unable to retrieve their funds or contact the women. Following these reports, police executed search warrants at their homes and took them into custody. Authorities are advising the public to perform background checks before engaging in similar financial arrangements.

Patta people always in someting dark n shady
Its about time someone is held responsible…
UPP done dead already all they need is to throw a dirt on it and call it George
When people are advised to ‘perform background checks’, what are they supposed to do? Are there privacy laws or rules that they have to be aware of when trying to do these ‘background’ checks.
Let us not forget that the majority of persons who get into these schemes are not college or university graduates. They are vendors, household helpers, street sweepers, etc., who are grappling for a hand up. Who do they turn to for that advice?
Why don’t our investment institutions, credit unions (and I know the credit unions do have something along those lines), banks etc. have a special course and subsequent account that caters to the needs of these people?
Teaching our people to fish rather than giving out a meal twice a year that does not even satisfy the hunger for that time.
Our people are so afraid of Co-operatives but that is the only way to start small and grow big.
Trust however is a big proponent. We have to have persons who are knowledgeable enough, trustworthy and who can reach those persons to spearhead such a program.
When I look at our Penny Bank which was spearheaded by persons who were trustworthy, see how it grew into ACB and grew again with the addition of ACB Mortgage and Trust, and now, sadly seems to have grown too high and mighty to continue catering to the poor and lowly, I am saddened. We need to get back to accommodating the grass roots and working with them to help them reach success.
I have never been a proponent of the box hand and/or sou-sou as I feel that only the ‘holder’ makes a profit. Each person has to pay a percentage to that person. If one is throwing two or three hands that is doubled or tripled.
My advice is to be disciplined, make a plan that is achievable and open an account with a reputable agency where at the end you can see a benefit being added.
Yep, finally. Box hand has helped many people for decades. These days they seem to be an increase in fraudulent activities when it comes with people not receiving their hands. I am glad the authorities are finally doing something about it . They also need to lock up those who already received their hands and refuse to pay back. I advice people at this moment to only throw box with people that work at the same company like them.
Credit union has a similar programme. Safer. Plus you get interest
The reason they have to do box is because the banks make it so difficult to have an account. Aside from that though, Box is usually done among family or friends. Why would you go to a stranger to do box?
@Joan, well said. I am here opening a business account at a bank I already have a bank account and doing so so funds I intend to donate is kept separate from my person use funds and it is going on a 9 months and I am still waiting.
Look at this box thing historically, it benifit the person and family who keep it, they are able to present a strong bank savings and ability to get USA visa from strong bank statement, so their kids get to go to the USA and college and eat and wear the best, have their house fix up, while you that throw the box have moments of hunger and suffering to take your meager salary to give to this individual foolishly believing you will attain their lifestyle, so all the flashy flamboyant lifestyle is a trap to get you to join the box hand for success you will never achieve, they will all start the box good untill they get certain amount of people in it then they escape with your money you work hard for.
me too wa kno a who dem be
JAIL DEM TIEFING RASS!!!!
We seem to have a culture of dishonesty in Antigua but we know where it all started. Didn’t they listen to Gaston? They should’ve written a bounced cheque to their victims like he proposed to do to WIOC.
Box hand as we generally call them are a very integral part of village life but do we know and understand the risks involved in these boxes? When you throw box with a group of persons, you are really doing so at the mercy of God and hoping that all the members in the box are credible and honest persons. You don’t go into a box without knowledge of the other people that are involved because you can end up on sh!t street. That is why the police and others always encourage people to use commercial banks as boxes are an illegitimate way of conducting financial transactions and when things goes bad, there is very little that they can do.
done floss and braff fi carnival, then travel to america to shop with ppl money, final stop JAIL!!!
