Former Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer has called for a “cleansing” of the police force, citing what he described as troubling behavioural patterns that demand urgent intervention.
Mr Spencer made the remarks on Friday outside Police Headquarters on American Road, where he joined relatives and supporters of Khaleel Simon — the young man fatally shot by police in Bolans several weeks ago.
Although the Simon family postponed their official protest until 3pm on Monday, a small group of residents gathered earlier in the day, carrying placards and chanting slogans that expressed frustration over alleged excessive use of force by law enforcement officers.
Speaking to reporters, Mr Spencer said the fatal shooting of Simon reflected deeper, systemic issues within the police force and underscored the need for comprehensive reform.
His appearance added momentum to growing calls for accountability, with Simon’s death now seen by many as emblematic of broader concerns around police conduct and eroding public trust.
Larger crowds are expected to converge later this afternoon, as the Simon family and their supporters continue to press for justice — both in the specific case and through wider reforms within the force.

If this former prime minister Hon. Baldwin Spencer a humble man is in the protest it’s a cause for concern.
What about the burglars / break-ins & gun men robbing & killing innocent person and nothing doing about it . Why dont he address that too.
Fed up. Why don’t you address it. Mr.Spencer was at the picket, were you?
This coming from the same person who instructed the people of Antigua and Barbuda to:
“SHARPEN U CUTLISS BACK AND BELLY. CHAP DEM UP!!!”????
are u can’t be serious
Jumble coming out from the graveyards, not even his close one remember him.
I’m still not following the need for a protest at this premature stage. There is an ongoing investigation, which must consists of a coroner’s report. A protest will not hasten the process and it ought not be a political football for anyone.
The work of the law enforcement should never be politicized as the same principals would certainly be the ones to serve in their capacity under any administration as they are career professionals.
As we all know that justice is slow. There will always be fatal incidents from time to time in police work. I can understand a grieving family in the process.
Let me say here that I can never pretend to comprehend the emotional torture that the family is experiencing at this time.
What I can say for sure is that cooler heads would bring better results than accusations and disrespect.
Emotions are running high as the law has to take its slow course.
Protests can be unwarranted at times, as this is one of them.
My sympathies go out to the family despite whatever the outcome will be.
In Mr. Spencer’s time as PM I voted ALP but I since left the party because of the Guttersnipe Leadership, and unbridled corruption and nepotism, Mr. Spencer wasn’t perfect, I thought he wasn’t tough enough, but he was much more decent than what passes for Leadership now
@ Hypocrisy
You could not have chosen a better name people like you is why we have descended to such depths and why we have to be saved from the degenerates who are in charge
The Lawless Leader owns all the blame. If he can give confidence to criminals with illegal guns, to conceal and discard their weapons from the authorities, what is going to deter those with legal guns and the support of the state from becoming rogue?
Street lights, cameras, proper signage, more police patroling at nights, give all police body cameras its about time you do so because alot of them aren’t professional at all and luke to abuse their authority…
